Andrew Ramsden Stakes 2012 Field & Barriers

This Saturday Flemington Racecourse will host its always popular two mile autumn feature, the 2012 Andrew Ramsden Stakes, which serves as a qualifier for the famous Melbourne Cup in the spring.

Glen Boss (aboard Shamrocker here) will ride the in-form mare Kirribilli Gold in the Andrew Ramsden Stakes 2012

Running as Flemington Race 6 at 2:56pm the $150,000 Listed Andrew Ramsden Stakes (3200m) originally drew a final field of 13 stayers but is now down to 12 with the early scratching of #4 Saddler’s Story.

Won 12 months ago by the Hawkes-trained Niwot who went on to run eight in the $6.2 million Group 1 Melbourne Cup (3200m) before winning the Sydney Cup last time out, the Andrew Ramsden Stakes is an excellent race for the punters.

It is shaping up as an open edition of Flemington’s other two mile handicap on Saturday with three obvious top fancies in Maythehorsebemagic, Almodovar and Kirribilli Gold.

Andrew Ramsden topweight with 60kg is the Michael Moroney-trained Maythehorsebemagic who is due to jump from barrier two with Dwayne Dunn aboard.

Dunn has ridden the veteran Zabeel seven-year-old for their past two starts which included a four length win in the JRA Handicap (2406m) at Caulfield in April when Maythehorsebemagic was still prepared by Brad Peterson, and their last start sixth in the Listed Warrnambool Cup (2350m).

The galloper was unsuited to the Heavy (8) conditions on Warrnambool Cup Day and with a firmer track and more ground is one of the horses to beat on Saturday.

Almodovar on the other hand is a known mudlark who performs well on all types ground.

The Peter Moody-trained Pins four-year-old won over 2600m at Flemington on a Heavy (8) on Anzac Day before their last start second to Dame Claire on May 5 over 2800m also at Flemington on a Slow (6).

Robert Smerdon’s six-year-old grey mare Kirribilli Gold meanwhile is out for her third win on the trot following two big wins this month.

The jumper won a 3200m hurdle race at Warrnambool by 10 lengths at the start of the month carrying 66kg before her last start win at Sandown in a flat race over 2400m by an impressive six lengths.

Kirribilli Gold is drawn in barrier eight for Saturday and will be ridden by Glen Boss, who rode 2010 Andrew Ramsden Stakes winner Persian Star to victory two years ago for Smerdon, for the first time.

“She’s flying at the moment, as you’ve seen by her last two wins,” Boss said.

“If she gets a bit of cut in the ground she’ll be devastating because she’s just absolutely flying at the moment.

“I’d expect her to run the trip (out) and be very, very hard to beat.”

Other notable chances that won’t be much longer in the Andrew Ramsden Stakes odds once released at bookmaker.com.au include Almodovar’s last-start conqueror Dame Claire, the Aaron Purcell-trained Streaky Fella and the Bryce Stanaway-trained Crafty Cruiser.
