Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Tim Martin’s Gosford Guineas winner Pampelonne has opened at the top of the markets for the 2012 Inglis 3YO Scone Guineas this Saturday, the promising youngster nearing odds-on territory.
Rock Of Gibraltar gelding Pampelonne is unbeaten this season with two good wins in Sydney most recently over Fox in the Listed Gosford Guineas (1200m) on April 22.
Saturday sees them contest the lucrative $500,000 Inglis 3YO Guineas (1400m) at Scone as they look to secure a trip up to Queensland for the $1 million Group 1 AAMI Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) at Eagle Farm next month.
Pampelonne already sits as the $10 third pick in the futures Stradbroke Handicap odds at bookmaker.com.au, a price that is set to firm should they complete Gosford – Inglis Guineas this weekend as last year’s Stradbroke Handicap winner Sincero did on way to their Group 1 victory in Brisbane.
The early Scone Guineas betting market mover, Pampelonne is already into $2.20 and could reach an odds-on price by jump time (4:00pm) on Saturday.
Just one of their rivals is considered any kind of chance against them on Saturday with fellow Stradbroke hopeful Colorado Claire paying $3.20.
Drawn wide in barrier 10, into nine with the early scratching of Little Bro, the John O’Shea-trained Hussonet filly was last seen beating home an open field including Rekindled Alliance in the Group 2 Phar Lap Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill on March 24.
For their Gosford Guineas win Pampelonne was ridden by top New Zealand hoop James McDonald.
McDonald however is committed to ride Colorado Claire on Saturday, who he rode to victory in the Phar Lap Stakes, Pampelonne to have Hugh Bowman aboard as a replacement.
Both top fancies need to win on Saturday to move up the Stradbroke Handicap ballot and it is sure to be a hotly contested race.
For an upset?
There are four other hopefuls under $20 in the Scone Inglis Guineas odds at bookmaker.com.au with Peter Moody’s Spinning World filly Torah ($16), Murray Baker’s Kiwi raider Passilente ($15) coming off a win over 1400m back home, the Bart Cummings-trained Falconer ($15) and Upbeat ($11).
Prepared by Bart Cummings’ son Anthony, Strategic gelding Upbeat will be ridden by Blake Shinn on Saturday, Shinn to start a six meeting suspension on Monday.
Winner of the Group 2 Autumn Classic (1800m) at Caulfield back on Blue Diamond Stakes Day, Upbeat bombed out last time out when failing to beat home any of their rivals in the Bendigo Guineas carrying 58.5kg.
After a short break Shinn believes they will be more competitive on Saturday with 56.5kg under the set weights conditions.
“He’s resuming off a little let-up and trialled very well at Warwick Farm the other day,” Shinn said.
“He’s a good quality horse that’s obviously won at Group 2 level.
“It’s quite a strong race with Pampelonne and Colorado Claire in there but apart from that there doesn’t appear to be really much depth.
“He appears to be one of the hardest to beat and he couldn’t be in any better shape going into the race.”
