A capacity field of sixteen fillies will line up...
Early Stradbroke Handicap favourite Mental has opened odds-on to win their next assignment in the Fred Best Classic 2012 on Doomben Cup Day this Saturday.
Peter Snowden’s lightly-raced Lonhro three-year-old was last seen winning a 1200m sprint at Hawkesbury on May 5 by three lengths which was their fourth turf triumph from seven starts to date.
While yet to step up to Group level, Saturday’s $125,000 Group 3 Ascend Sales Fred Best Classic (1350m) their first, they were competitive when a length away fourth to Instinction in the Listed Hilton Hotels Stakes (1400m) at Flemington last Melbourne Cup Carnival.
So far the bookies and punters have liked what they’ve seen from Mental and the gelding tops the futures markets for the $1 million Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) at Eagle Farm on June 9 over last Saturday’s BTC Cup winner Sea Siren.
Mental has also opened as the top fancy in the Fred Best Classic odds at bookmaker.com.au paying $2.35 after coming up trumps with barrier four.
For their win at Hawkesbury Mental was ridden by Christian Reith but their Emirates Stakes Day jockey Kerrin McEvoy reunites with them this weekend.
Only two other horses currently pay under $10 in the Fred Best Classic betting markets to upset Mental with:
- #9 Amah Rock ($8) – Peter Morgan-trained Fastnet Rock gelding won over 1440m at Caulfield second-up on April 21 carrying 58.5kg (drop to 57kg on Saturday), beat Mental home when third in the Hilton Hotels Stakes during the spring, are a stakes winner at Moonee Valley but have to overcome barrier 12 on Saturday
- #1 Easy Running ($9.50) – Desleigh Forster’s Magic Millions Guineas runner-up should get a lovely run from gate five with Damian Browne riding, won the Listed Mick Dittman Plate (1000m) first-up at Eagle Farm before their failed run (11th of 16) in the Gold Coast Guineas last time out, ignore it it was on a Heavy (8) and they will improve
Other long priced contenders worth a look in for exotics or an upset include the Kelly Doughty-trained Morning Captain ($11) who will be ridden by Chris Munce and who won over 1350m at Doomben two back, Magic Millions Guineas winner Punch On ($11) who resumed with a good first-up second in the Gold Coast Guineas, and Liam Birchley’s GC Guineas fourth placed Jet Spur filly Emmalene ($14) who won a Listed race at Flemington last Melbourne Cup Carnival.
