2012 Dark Jewel Classic Field & Betting Odds

Betting markets for the Dark Jewel Classic 2012, running at Scone Racecourse this Saturday, have two of the great Sydney trainers up against each other with the Gai Waterhouse-trained More Strawberries holding narrow favouritism over Peter Snowden’s defending champ Shannara.

Peter Snowden

Peter Snowden will be represented by three hopefuls in the 2012 Dark Jewel Classic at Scone on Saturday

Due to run as Scone Race 6 at 3:15pm the $200,000 Listed Coolmore Dark Jewel Classic (1400m) features a field of 14 fillies and mares but there are really only two in it according to the bookies.

Waterhouse’s More Than Ready four-year-old More Strawberries has opened top of the Dark Jewel Classic odds at bookmaker.com.au at a quote of $4.60 after drawing ideally in barrier two.

She comes off an eye-catching second-up win over Ladys Angel in the Listed Darley Crown (1300m) at Hawkesbury on May 5 when ridden by Nash Rawiller, Tommy Berry replacing them on Saturday.

In a tight market Snowden’s five-year-old Octagonal mare Shannara is then the $4.80 second elect.

A dual stakes winner Shannara was last seen running fourth when beaten just over half a length by Skyerush in the Group 2 Emancipation Stakes (1600m) at Randwick on Sydney Cup Day.

Twelve months ago Shannara won the Dark Jewel Classic after a third in the Emancipation so if she can go won better in Saturday’s showdown like she did last start then she will win.

The other more notable horses in the Dark Jewel Classic field and betting markets include:

  • #10 Forfeiture (blink text=”$6.50″]) – Snowden’s other runner, won at Moonee Valley two back before their fourth to More Strawberries in the Darley Crown, drawn in barrier seven and is a genuine danger
  • #11 Miss Marx ($9) – John O’Shea-trained Anabaa mare ran fifth in the Darley Crown last time out, gets the jockey (James McDonald) and draw (barrier three) to be competitive stepping up to the 1400m
  • #8 Potions ($10) – John Thompson’s Encosta De Lago mare ran a good third in the Darley Crown which looks to be the form line leading into this

Along with Shannara and Forfeiture Snowden will also be represented in the race this year by 417 roughie Quidnunc.

“Shannara’s the pick of the three,” Snowden said of his Dark Jewel Classic trio

“She was good in the Emancipation, is going very well and this is probably her best distance.

“Forfeiture’s run at Hawkesbury was very good.

“She finished right on the backs of the placegetters with nowhere to go the last 50 metres.

“She’ll run well.

“Quidnunc probably lacks the class of the other two but she is very genuine and if she has some luck in running, if something goes her way, she’s capable but I just think the others have a class edge on her.”
