Betting for the 2018 Group 1 $700,000 Altus...
The crucial lead-up race for three-year-old fillies heading towards the classic Queensland Oaks will run at Doomben this Saturday with a capacity field accepted for the 2012 The Doomben Roses.
Due to jump at 2:30pm as Doomben Race 5 the $175,000 Group 3 Hidden Dragon The Roses (2000m) has drawn 16 starters plus five emergencies, the bulk of which are looking to stake their claims for the $400,000 Group 1 Queensland Oaks (2400m) at Eagle Farm on June 2.
Current favourite in the Queensland Oaks odds at bookies around the country is Shaune Ritchie’s New Zealand Oaks winner Miss Artistic.
The daughter of Darci Brahma will get her chance to improve on her fourth to Scorpio Queen in the Listed Gold Coast Bracelet (1800m) last start, which was her Australian debut and which was run on a Heavy (8) track.
On Saturday Chris Munce retains the ride with Miss Artistic drawn in barrier nine.
If successful Miss Artistic will become the second New Zealand-trained filly to take out The Roses in as many years following the success of Scarlett Lady, who went on to win last year’s Queensland Oaks as well, 12 months ago
Gold Coast Bracelet winner Scorpio Queen is also backing up in The Roses, Chris Waller’s Choisir filly drawn in barrier 12.
Other fillies coming via the GC Bracelet include runner-up Secret Garden and third placegetter Anagold who pay $31 and $21 respectively in the latest Queensland Oaks odds.
Paul Nolan’s Toowoomba galloper Secret Garden won three on the trot before her Gold Coast Bracelet defeat and will get the inside run from barrier one on Saturday, while Anagold has drawn wide with 17.
Also suffering an early blow with an outside gate for The Roses is the Gerald Ryan-trained Angel Of Mercy who is the close second favourite behind Miss Artistic in the Queensland Oaks betting markets.
Due to be ridden by Corey Brown the Hussonet filly has won her last two starts with a win in the Listed James HB Carr Stakes (1400m) at Randwick on April 28 followed by her good win over the Doomben mile last Saturday.
“She’s come through her race really well,” Ryan said.
“The back-up won’t be a worry and if she’s as strong at the end of 2000 metres as I think she will be, then we will go on to the Oaks.”
Other notable The Roses hopefuls this year include the John Sargent-trained NZ Oaks third placegetter Quintessential, fellow Kiwi filly Dowager Queen prepared by last year’s winning trainer Graeme Rogerson, the John Thompson-trained Pretty Pins and Peter Snowden’s Lonhro filly Angelus coming off a super six length win over 1600m at the Sunshine Coast from last Saturday.
