Pampelonne Heads 2012 Inglis 3YO Scone Guineas Field

Tim Martin’s Stradbroke Handicap fancy Pampelonne will look to continue their purple patch of form when they lead out a strong field of fellow three-year-olds in the Inglis 3YO Scone Guineas 2012 this Saturday.

Running as Scone Race 7 at 4:00pm on the second meeting of the two-day Scone Cup Carnival, the $500,000 Inglis 3YO Guineas (1400m) this year attracted a full field of 16.

The line-up is down to 15 hopefuls however following the early scratching of #6 Little Bro.

Sure to be favourite in the Scone Guineas odds once markets are released at bookmaker.com.au is Rock Of Gibraltar gelding Pampelonne who is on trial for the $1 million Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) at Brisbane’s Eagle Farm Racecourse next month.

Pampelonne currently occupies the third line of Stradbroke Handicap betting at bookmaker.com.au paying $10.

They are two from two this season most recently having won the Listed Gosford Guineas (1200m) on April 22 when ridden by flying New Zealand jockey James McDonald.

McDonald is replaced on Saturday by Hugh Bowman who rides the youngster for the first time since their big two length win on debut at Warwick Farm last September.

If successful in securing the Gosford – Scone Guineas double Pampelonne will be the second horse in as many years to do so following in the footsteps of Sincero who also went on to win last year’s Stradbroke.

“He is very promising,” Martin said of Pampelonne.

“He’s improving all the time and that is a good sign.”

Along with Pampelonne there are four other last start winners engaged in this year’s Inglis 3YO Guineas including the Peter Nestor-trained Private Taber who is drawn nicely in gate four.

The Strategic gelding finished runner-up four times on the trot this time in before finally scoring their maiden turf triumph at Dubbo over 1400m on April 30.

Also out for their third on the trot like Pampelonne is then Fayez who is out wide in barrier 14, the son of Encosta De Lago having won at Port Macquarie and then Kempsey by a accumulative 5.5 lengths.

Cambridge trainer Murray Baker will saddle up his Kiwi raider Passilente in barrier two.

The More Than Ready filly scored her third career win from 12 starts back on May 4 at Hastings and will return to Australia having started her career in Melbourne under the preparation of Peter Moody.

Rounding out the last-start winners is then the John O’Shea-trained Colorado Claire who is looking for a win to move up the Stradbroke Handicap ballot.

The Hussonet filly beat home the boys on March 24 to win the Group 2 Phar Lap Stakes (1500m) but is still in danger of missing out on a start in the Stradbroke sitting 38th on the order of entry.
