Stradbroke Handicap Weights 2012 – Sea Siren on 52.5kg

Last weekend’s record breaking BTC Cup winning filly Sea Siren is still on track for a run in Queensland’s richest race with trainer John O’Shea happy with her allocation in the 2012 Stradbroke Handicap weights on Monday.

The $1 million Group 1 AAMI Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) is set to take centre stage at Eagle Farm on Saturday June 9, and yesterday Racing Queensland released weights for the 109 nominations.

Fastnet Rock three-year-old Sea Siren was bought up from Sydney to target the Stradbroke but O’Shea has been harbouring concerns that the youngster would be weighted out of contention after she won the Group 1 BTC Cup (1200m) in commanding fashion last Saturday.

For now he is happy with the 52.5kg she has been dealt, 2kg over the minimum.

He knows however that more weight will be on its way should Sea Siren go on to win her next assignment in the $650,000 Group 1 Doomben 10,000 (1350m) on May 26.

“It’s about what I expected … it’s three kilograms below weight-for-age,” O’Shea said.

“My only concern is the potential for a penalty if she wins the Doomben 10,000.”

O’Shea is looking for his second Stradbroke success with a three-year-old filly following Private Steer who carried 48kg to victory in 2003.

Two other three-year-old fillies have also won the Stradbroke Handicap over the years with La Montagna (2006) and Dane Ripper (1997), but as they carried 48.5kg and 50kg respectively Sea Siren would be setting a weight record if she was to win next month.

The filly is currently the $9 second favourite in the Stradbroke Handicap odds at trailing only the Peter Snowden-trained Mental.

Last start Haweksbury winner Mental runs second-up in the $125,000 Group 3 Fred Best Classic (1350m) at Doomben on Saturday, a win in which will see them firm in from their $8 Stradbroke price.

Mental is well weighted for the Stradbroke too on the 50.5kg minimum.

The other notable Stradbroke hope allocated minimum weight is $10 third favourite Pampelonne.

Tim Martin’s flying Rock Of Gibraltar gelding has won both of their runs this season including the Listed Gosford Guineas (1200m).

Topping the Stradbroke Handicap weights with 58kg is the Chris Waller-trained Albert The Fat ($18), last year’s Emirates Stakes winner last seen running a brave fourth to Atlantic Jewel in the Group 1 All Aged Stakes (1400m) at Randwick on Sydney Cup Day.

The other top weighted horses for the 2012 Stradbroke Handicap are then:

  • Black Piranha (57.5kg / $41) – Con Karakatsanis’ rising eight year old and dual Stradbroke Handicap winner in 2009-10, last seen running a disappointing first-up 11th to Sea Siren in the BTC Cup
  • Buffering (57kg / $11) – Rob Heathcote’s withdrawn BTC Cup favourite, suffering from a minor leg injury but is expected to return in the Doomben 10,000 Saturday week
  • Woorim (56.5kg / $14) – Fellow Heathcote-trained hopeful, won the Oakleigh Plate in Melbourne back in February but hasn’t impressed since
  • Beaded (56kg / $18) – Reigning Doomben 10,000 champ, Peter Snowden’s six-year-old Lonhro mare showed she still had a zest for racing with a third in the BTC Cup but won’t be running in the Stradbroke
  • Temple Of Boom (56kg / – Tony Gollan-trained winner of The Galaxy two back, failed to impress when ninth in the BTC Cup
