Ryan Wary of Sizzling in Champagne Classic 2012

He may have an in-form Snitzel colt lining up in the 2012 Champagne Classic at Doomben on Saturday with Dances On Stars but Rosehill horseman Gerald Ryan knows another son of Snitzel, Sizzling, is going to be mighty hard to beat in the juvenile’s showdown.

Sizzling is the horse to beat in the 2012 Champagne Classic at Doomben on Saturday

Despite nominations having been extended 24 hours this year’s edition of the $175,000 Group 2 Bollinger Champagne Classic (1200m) still only has nine official nominees.

Red hot favourite for the two-year-olds set weights clash is the Kelso Wood-trained Sizzling.

Fourth to Driefontein in the Gold Coast Magic Millions 2YO Classic back in January Sizzling resumed with a huge win in the Listed Ken Russell Memorial Classic (1200m) at the Gold Coast on May 5.

Showing their ability to handle all types of ground Sizzling had no problems with the Heavy (8) course and put a minimum four and a half lengths when outclassing their rivals.

Ken Russell runner-up Dances On Stars may have been well beaten in the race but they will be back up against Sizzling this Saturday looking to turn the tables in the Champagne Classic with jockey Glyn Schofield maintaining their association.

A first-up winner of the Group 3 Kindergarten Stakes (1100m) at Randwick on April 14 Dances On Stars is no dill but Ryan isn’t either and he isn’t downplaying the task ahead.

“Sizzling is the one to beat,” Ryan said.

“The formlines through the Magic Millions are strong but I’m happy with Dances On Stars.”

Ryan said that after Saturday Dances On Stars would progress onto the $250,000 Group 2 BTC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) at Eagle Farm on June 6 as trial for the $500,000 Group 1 The TJ Smith (1600m) the following Saturday on Stradbroke Handicap Day.

“He will go on to the Sires’ Produce Stakes and when we see how he handles the 1400 metres, we will decide on stepping up over further to the TJ Smith,” he said.

The other notable Champagne Classic nominee is David Lawlor’s upset Hampden Stakes winner Noogoora Burr who won’t be found at $40 again this weekend.
