Joe Pride is shocked with the weight his progressive four-year-old Tiger Tees received for next month’s 2012 Stradbroke Handicap in Brisbane, the Warwick Farm horseman speaking out about the allocation.
Dubawi four-year-old Tiger Tees copped 53kg for the $1 million Group 1 AAMI Stradbroke Handicap (1400m), Queensland’s richest race to run at Eagle Farm Racecourse on Saturday June 9.
The weight is 2.5kg above the minimum and equal with the likes of Group 3 Victoria Handicap winner Smokin’ Joey, the Tony Gollan-trained Magic Millions Cup champ Spirit Of Boom and Star Of Octagonal coming off a win in the Hawkesbury Rowley mile.
Tiger Tees resumed on Sydney Cup Day to score a narrow win over Pinwheel in the Listed Hall Mark Stakes (1200m) at Randwick which was the gelding’s maiden stakes run and win.
As yet untested at Group level Pride cannot understand why they are on 53kg, Tiger Tees sitting 26th on the Stradbroke Handicap ballot.
“I thought I was flying nicely down the radar until someone shot me down,” Pride said.
“Here is another horse that I have taken through his grades using the benchmark system and I was hoping to get a free hit at Group 1 with him.
“But that (weight) shocks me, he hadn’t even won an open-class race until the other day.
“You do the right thing by your owners and win as many races as possible and you get stung.”
Tiger Tees is engaged to face off against other Stradbroke Handicap fancies including Smokin’ Joey, Thankgodyou’rehere and Torio’s Quest in the $125,000 Group 3 Darley BRC Sprint (1350m) on Doomben Cup Day this Saturday.
“He is going to run in the BRC Sprint but if he wins that and gets a penalty where does that leave us? I think he is weighed up to his best already,” Pride added.
In the latest Stradbroke Handicap odds at bookmaker.com.au Tiger Tees pays $15 as does the horse they defeated last start, Pinwheel.
Pride also has Neeson (54.5kg) heading towards the Stradbroke Handicap this year.
The Mossman gelding has been in strong form this season including a close fourth to Master Of Design in the Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes (1200m) and a narrow third when defeated just a long neck by Tiger Tees in the Hall Mark Stakes.
They ran at Doomben in the Group 1 BTC Cup (1200m) last Saturday but could only manage to finish six and a half lengths away eighth to Sea Siren and as such eased out in the Stradbroke Handicap betting markets to $21.
