Melbourne Cup 2012 Hope in Andrew Ramsden Stakes Noms

This Saturday Michael Moroney’s veteran stayer Maythehorsebemagic will attempt to pass the first qualifying clause for the 2012 Melbourne Cup when they run in the $150,000 Listed Andrew Ramsden Stakes (3200m) at Flemington.

Last year's Andrew Ramsden Stakes winner Niwot went on to win this year's Sydney Cup

A total of 17 gallopers have been nominated for the other famous Flemington two-mile feature, the Andrew Ramsden Stakes won 12 months ago by subsequent Sydney Cup winner Niwot.

The Hawkes-trained Niwot would go on to win the Group 3 The Lexus Stakes (2500m) at Flemington on Victoria Derby Day during the spring before finishing best of the Aussies when eighth behind the imports and international raiders in the iconic $6.2 million Group 1 Emirates Melbourne Cup (3200m).

Niwot was last seen taking out the Group 1 Sydney Cup run over the Randwick two miles on April 28, making the Andrew Ramsden Stakes a powerful form race for the punters.

One horse looking for a shot at the ‘race that stops a nation’ this year that will use the Andrew Ramsden as a Melbourne Cup springboard is Zabeel seven-year-old Maythehorsebemagic.

Four length winner of the JRA Handicap (2406m) at Caulfield in April when under the preparation of Brad Peterson, the former Kiwi is now trained by Moroney.

They debuted for their new trainer on May 3 running eighth in the Listed Warrnambool Cup (2350m) on a Heavy (8) track, and are tipped for improvement on firmer ground over more distance on Saturday.

Other notable Andrew Ramsden Stakes nominations this year include the Peter Moody-trained Almodovar, Pat Carey’s Danehill Dancer mare Dame Claire coming off a three length win over Almodovar at Flemington, and the Robert Smderdon-trained stablemates Saddler’s Story and Kirribilli Gold.

Six-year-old Made Of Gold mare Kirribilli Gold will be out for her third win on the trot, the grey galloper having won a jumps race at Warrnambool over 3200m by 10 lengths two back carrying a hefty 66kg before their last-start win over 2400m on the flat at Sandown by six lengths.

The Andrew Ramsden Stakes 2012 field and barriers are due out later this week and will be published right here at
