Lightinthenite Ready for Scone Cup 2012

Promisng John O’Shea-trained gelding Lightinthenite will take on a host of more experienced horses in Friday’s Listed $180,000 2012 Scone Cup in what will be just his second start this year.

The son of Galileo won his last start at Randwick on April 21 ahead of Emancipation Stakes winner Skyerush and has produced consistent performances throughout his young career.

He boasts a record of five wins from nine starts but has only missed out on placing on two occasions and O’Shea is expecting him to continue to improve on Friday.

“I think Lightinthenite will run a big race in the Cup,” O’Shea said.

“He has been very consistent and is a young horse on the way up.”

He is one of 24 horses nominated to fill the 16 Scone Cup positions and will be aided by the services of talented New Zealand jockey James McDonald who has been in sensational riding form.

Lightinthenite has been allocated the minimum weight of 54kg, which is five kilograms less than Gai Waterhouse-trained top weight Fast Clip (59kg).

Fast Clip has received the top weight allocation on the back of recent results, including an impressive victory in the Group 3 Doncaster Prelude.

He stands as one of the horses to beat in Friday’s feature event along with Todd Howlett-trained Star Of Octagonal who will carry 57.5kg.

The Octagonal gelding received the weight as a result of his recent Rowley Mile win at Hawkesbury and the five-year-old has been a picture of consistency this year.

From six starts in 2012, Star Of Octagonal has won twice and placed on all four other occasions, leaving him with a career record of five wins from 20 starts and a prize pool of over $800,000.

Other horses nominated for the Scone Cup include Peter Snowden-trained pair Raspberries and Divorces and Queen Of The Turf Stakes runner-up Miss Keepsake.
