Doomben Cup Day Nominations – BTC Lord Mayor’s Cup 2012

One of the seven Group race highlights on Saturday’s Doomben Cup Day program will be the 2012 BTC Lord Mayor’s Cup which has drawn a diminutive but classy list of 11 gallopers at nomination stage.

Chris Waller's Kiwi import Firebolt will be out to defend their title in the 2012 Lord Mayor's Cup on Saturday

Racing Queensland extended nominations for the $115,000 Group 3 Carlton Mid Lord Mayor’s Cup (1600m) until 9am this morning but there are still only 11 hopefuls entered for the weight-for-age clash.

There is no shortage of talent however with nominations led by Michael Kent’s former AJC Oaks winner Absolutely who comes off a ninth to More Joyous in the Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) at Randwick on April 21.

Last year’s winning Lord Mayor’s Cup quinella of Firebolt and St Germaine will both be back on Saturday.

The Chris Waller-trained Stravinsky six-year-old Firebolt won the race 12 months ago when prepared in New Zealand by Roger James.

Firebolt joined Waller’s Sydney operation midway through last year but hasn’t won a race since their Lord Mayor’s victory.

They did look threatening last Saturday however when coming within a length of Kinnersley to run third in the ATC Lord Mayor’s Cup (2000m) at Rosehill.

John Sargent’s fellow New Zealander St Germaine meanwhile has been out of form over the past year, their most recent appearance being a first-up seventh to Risk Aversion in the Listed Juanmo Stakes (1200m) at Eagle Farm.

Having enjoyed a good Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival last year Sargent is hoping a return trip to the sunshine state will bring with it a return to form from the five-year-old Keeper mare.

Another Kiwi in the Lord Mayor’s Cup mix on Saturday is the Graeme Boyd-trained Ginga Dude, the rising nine-year-old Istidaad gelding having beaten home the likes of Triple Honour and Scenic Shot to win a Listed handicap over the Eagle Farm mile on April 21.

Other notable Lord Mayor’s Cup hopes include last year’s SA Derby winner Shadows In The Sun, and the Rob Heathcote-trained duo of BTC Cup Day winner Solzhenitsyn and Bianconi mare Fillydelphia.

The Doomben Cup Day acceptances are due out on Wednesday with to publish all the fields and previews right here.
