Despite showing she still had what it takes to run against the best with a big BTC Cup performance on Saturday, Peter Snowden has ruled out a title defense for Beaded in the Doomben 10,000 saying the mare’s last remaining Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival run would be in the 2012 Tattersall’s Tiara.
Six-year-old Lonhro mare Beaded was right in the finish for the Group 1 BTC Cup (1200m) at Doomben on the weekend when she was narrowly nudged out of second place when finishing third behind winner Sea Siren and eye-catching runner-up Scenic Blast.
It proved that Snowden’s assessment of her, Beaded having been threatened with retirement earlier this month, as still having the zest for racing to be correct.
Last winter Beaded travelled to Queensland and won the $650,000 Group 1 Doomben 10,000 (1350m) first-up in a tight finish with Love Conquers All.
She went on to finish a long neck away second to Sincero in the $1 million Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) at Eagle Farm before her season swansong when a long neck away second again this time to Yosei in the $500,000 Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m).
In last year’s Tatt’s Tiara Beaded was blocked for a run and would likely have won with a clear passage.
With Snowden ruling out both the Doomben 10,000 and Stradbroke Handicap for her this year it leaves just the 2012 Tattersall’s Tiara, also known as the Winter Stakes, at Eagle Farm on June 23 where Beaded will be out to atone.
“At this stage her only remaining run at the carnival is the Tattersall’s Tiara,” Snowden said.
“I won’t put any strain on her. I’d never forgive myself if I went too hard on her.”
Over the past few years Beaded has been one of the most consistent Group 1 performers for Snowden’s stables.
She has won 10 and placed in another 13 of her 26 career starts to date earning over $1.6 million in prize money.
Eleven of her runs have been at Group 1 level though the Doomben 10,000 remains her only elite level triumph.
She has only finished outside the top three on three occasions when a brave fourth to Black Piranha in the 2010 Stradbroke Handicap, then 11th and 5th in this year’s Newmarket Handicap and William Reid Stakes respectively when something went amiss with her autumn preparation.
