Sizzling Leads 2012 Champagne Classic Nominations

The major support race on the Doomben Cup Day program at Doomben this Saturday will be the Champagne Classic 2012 which has attracted just nine two-year-olds at nomination stage today, the headliner of which is local Brisbanite Sizzling.

Sizzling is the top fancy for the Champagne Classic 2012 on Doomben Cup Day this Saturday

Alongside the day’s marquee event, the $500,000 Group 1 Doomben Cup (2000m), the $175,000 Group 2 Bollinger Champagne Classic (1200m) is the only other event on the Doomben race card on Saturday to hold higher than Group 3 status.

Racing Queensland has extended nominations for the juvenile’s set weights feature until 9:00am on Tuesday in an attempt to attract more entries.

Despite the small number of nominees the 2012 Champagne Classic is already shaping up as a scintillating showdown with Sizzling the sure-to-be favourite in the markets if accepted.

Kelso Wood’s talented Snitzel colt resumed racing on May 5 at the Gold Coast to put an easy four and a half lengths on their rivals in the Listed Ken Russell Memorial Classic (1200m).

It was their second win from a promising five start career to date that also included a good fourth to Driefontein in the Gold Coast Magic Millions 2YO Classic back in January.

Ken Russell runner-up Dances On Stars has also been nominated for round two against Sizzling on Saturday.

Gerald Ryan-trained Dances On Stars is another Snitzel colt who was a first-up winner of the Group 3 Kindergarten Stakes (1100m) at Randwick before their distant second to Sizzling last time out.

The other big name Champagne Classic nomination this year is then David Lawlor’s Noogoora Burr.

The progressive Royal Academy gelding broke a five month losing streak on Saturday with a brilliant form return in the Listed Hampden Stakes (1200m) at Doomben.

Having beaten Sizzling in the listed Phelan Ready Stakes (1000m) back in December Noogoora Burr failed to finish better than fifth in their next four runs that included a disastrous 13th when beaten 23 lengths by Sizzling in the Ken Russell.

They were unsuited to the Heavy (8) track that day and showed they were a much better type than that when defeating Hoss Amor by one and three quarter lengths on the weekend.

Other notable hopes include Peter Snowden’s Lonhro gelding Academus who debuted with a second at Hawkesbury over 1200m on May 5, and one-time Magic Millions fancy Discreet.

Stay tuned to for all the Doomben Cup Day updates.
