Scone Cup 2012 – Nominations

A huge weekend of racing will take place at Scone this weekend and one of the highlights of the bumper two day carnival takes place on Friday with the Listed $180,000 2012 Scone Cup (1600m).

Fast Clip

Fast Clip is one of the top nominations for the Scone Cup

The lucrative prize pool has enticed trainers to bring plenty of quality horses to Scone and headlining the Scone Cup nominations is Doncaster Prelude winner Fast Clip who has been allocated the top weight of 59kg.

Trained by Gai Waterhouse, the four-year-old gelding backed up his Doncaster Prelude win with a solid fifth against a quality Doncaster Mile field but struggled last start at Hawkesbury in the Rowley Mile.

The son of Snippetson gets a chance to bounce back from his last-start failure when he comes up against Rowley Mile winner Star Of Octagonal who will carry 57.5kg.

A winner of five of 20 starts, the Todd Howlett-trained gelding has been in impressive form in 2012, winning twice from six starts but placing on the other four occasions.

John Thompson-trained gelding Gathering gets a chance to turn around his horror recent run, having not recorded victory since his Group 1 win in the Railway Stakes at Ascot in November 2010.

Since then it has been tough going for the Tale Of The Cat five-year-old who has finished a best of seventh from his six most recent starts and was last seen running 13th in the Hollindale Stake son May 5.

Another nominated horse with Group 1 credentials is 2010 Queensland Oaks winner Miss Keepsake who finished second to More Joyous earlier this year in the Queen Of The Turf Stakes.

The Joseph Pride-trained mare is one of two New Zealand horses included in nominations with the other being Montjeu gelding Mr Tipsy who is returning from a spell after last running at the back of the field in December’s Summer Cup.

Other nominated horses include Peter Snowden-trained pair Raspberries and Divorces, last-start winner Lightinthenite and 2011 South Australian Derby winner Shadows In The Sun.

The betting market will open later this week for the Scone feature event and the best place to back a winner is at bookmaker.com.au.
