Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
With the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival now officially underway punters are starting to get a clearer betting picture for the upcoming Group 1’s including the 2012 Queensland Derby.
Running at Eagle Farm on Stradbroke Handicap Day, June 9, the $500,000 Group 1 Queensland Derby (2400m) is the premier staying feature for three-year-olds for the winter racing season.
While still a doubtful starter Leon Corsten’s South Australian Derby winner Zabeelionaire remains at the top of the Queensland Derby odds at bookmaker.com.au paying $3.50.
Equal $6 second fancies are then New Zealand Oaks winning filly Miss Artistic who is also heading towards the $400,000 Group 1 Queensland Oaks (2400m) one week before the Derby, and the Peter Moody-trained Soros who won at Flemington over 2000m last start.
Moody could have as many as four livewire Queensland Derby chances this year with his other hopefuls including $151 roughie Daley, $9 third fancy Vatuvei who won the Listed VRC St Leger (2800m) at Flemington on Anzac Day, and Savabeel gelding Brambles who is now into $15.
Brambles entered the QLD Derby picture on the weekend when they scored a tight victory over an unlucky Margins in the Group 3 Rough Habit Plate (2000m).
“He’s right on track for the Derby,” jockey Brad Rawiller said of Brambles after Saturday’s success.
“In his last 50 metres he hit the line very strongly.
“The inside barrier helped and he travelled sweetly.
“We didn’t have much room where we were but once he got through he really pinged.”
While Brambles got the bikkies on the day Toowoomba galloper Margins did well to come within a nose of success after nearly falling earlier in the run.
Margins is not currently nominated for the Derby but their trainer Ben Currie will speak to connections this week about paying the late entry.
Jockey Timothy Bell will certainly be encouraging the fee be paid to get the Parameter gelding into the race having been aboard for their stella Rough Habit run.
“I know a lot of people say they were unlucky but he should have won and was a certainty beaten,” Bell said of Margins.
“I don’t know how I didn’t come down.
“It was a credit to the horse he was able to stay on his feet.
“Then coming to the 700 metres I got held up a little.
“It was only the last little bit that he weakened.
“All things being equal, I guarantee he will turn the tables on the winner next time they meet.”
The Margins v Brambles rematch could come before the Derby with both likely to back up in the $150,000 Group 3 Grand Prix Stakes (2200m) at Doomben on May 26.
