Peter Snowden’s Victorian filly Euryale will continue on the Queensland Oaks 2012 path after proving to connections she deserves a trip to the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival with a good win in Sydney on the weekend.
The Lonhro three-year-old improved on her opening two starts for the season finally getting up to a more suitable distance on Saturday when beating home the Chris Waller-trained Lucripetous by three quarters of a length in a Benchmark 72 over 1800-metres at Rosehill.
The race was a trial for the $400,000 Group 1 Queensland Oaks (2400m) which runs at Eagle Farm on June 2.
“Euryale was on trial today for the Queensland Oaks and after that performance I’m sure she will be aimed at the race,” Snowden’s stable representative Brad Widdup said on Saturday.
It was the first time Euryale had been in the winners’ stall since her Listed Gibson Carmichael Stakes (1600m) victory at Flemington 12 months ago.
Since then her only top three finish was a third to Proliferate in the Listed Myer Spring Fashion Stakes (1800m) at Flemington in early November.
Snowden credited the Rosehill triumph to Euryale having had her blinkers taken off, and her liking for a longer distance.
Having been ridden by Kerrin McEvoy for her first two runs this time in when finishing seventh and sixth over 1400m and 1550m at Randwick and Canterbury respectively, Euryale had a jockey change on the weekend with Rod Quinn taking the mount.
Quinn was impressed with the winning filly and said she felt as though she would get the Queensland Oaks distance.
“It feels like she will go all day,” Quinn said.
“She ran right through the line and it took forever to pull her up.”
Queensland Oaks odds at bookies around the country are dominated by the likes of New Zealand Oaks conqueror Miss Artistic and BTC Cup Day winner Angel Of Mercy.
Other top fancies include Gold Coast Bracelet champion Scorpio Queen and another Kiwi in Poste Restante who debuted down under with a close third to Brambles in the Group 3 Rough Habit Plate (2000m) at Doomben on the weekend.
Further down the Queensland Oaks betting markets punters can find Euryale at a quote of around $17.
