2012 The Doomben Roses Nominations – QLD Oaks Race On

This Saturday a field full of Queensland Oaks-bound fillies will face off in The Roses 2012 at Doomben Racecourse including the pre-post Oaks favourite Miss Artistic.

Angel Of Mercy will back up from her BTC Cup Day win in the 2012 The Roses at Doomben this Saturday

A total of 31 three-year-old fillies have been nominated for the $175,000 Group 3 The Roses (2000m) this year, an event won 12 months ago by Kiwi visitor Scarlett Lady.

Scarlett Lady went on to score a decisive win in the Group 1 Queensland Oaks (2400m) last Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival making The Roses an essential race for the bookmaker.com.au punters to keep an eye on.

This year Miss Artistic will look to go back-to-back for the New Zealanders, the Shaune Ritchie-trained Darci Brahma filly having just their second start down under.

Winner of the New Zealand Oaks (2400m) at Trentham back in March she debuted in Australia on May 5 running a credible fourth to Scorpio Queen in the Listed Gold Coast Bracelet (1800m) on a Heavy (8) track.

The three youngsters that beat Miss Artistic home in the Bracelet are also all nominated for The Roses with winner Scorpio Queen, runner-up Secret Garden and the third placed Anagold.

Set to improve as she gets a firmer track and steps up in distance Miss Artistic leads the Queensland Oaks betting markets at bookies around the country paying around $4.20, a price sure to firm if she is successful on Saturday.

Other notable New Zealand raiders in The Roses mix this year are the John Sargent-trained NZ Oaks third placegetter Quintessential coming off a fourth to Trump in the Group 3 Gunsynd Classic (1600m) at Eagle Farm on May 2, and Savabeel filly Dowager Queen who is well tried in Australia having run in Brisbane, Sydney and Flemington.

Her most recent run on Aussie soil was second to the mighty Mosheen in the Group 1 Crown Oaks (2500m) when beaten by nine lengths at Flemington during last year’s Melbourne Cup Carnival.

Second pick in the Queensland Oaks odds is then Gerald Ryan’s in-form Hussonet filly Angel Of Mercy.

Angel Of Mercy has won her last two races backing up from a Listed James HB Carr Stakes (1400m) victory at Randwick to win her Doomben debut over the mile last Saturday.

Another filly coming off a win last weekend that will go to The Roses seven days later is the Peter Snowden-trained daughter of Lonhro Euryale who won the Zac Homes Handicap (1800m) at Rosehill.

Snowden also has fellow Lonhro three-year-old Angelus nominated, the filly having improved on her dead last finish in the Gold Coast Bracelet to win at the Sunshine Coast by six lengths on Sunday.

Notable Queensland Oaks hopes that aren’t going the traditional path via The Roses include another Kiwi in Poste Restante who ran a close third to Brambles in the Group 3 Rough Habit Plate (2000m) at Doomben last Saturday, and Michael Kent’s Schweppes Oaks runner-up Our Miss Jones.

The 2012 The Doomben Roses field is due out later in the week with Races.com.au to publish the full list of acceptors.
