Sea Siren Takes 2012 BTC Cup Top Honours

Talented filly Sea Siren has produced a sensational run to win the Group 1 Group 1 2012 BTC Cup (1200m) on the opening day of the Winter Carnival at Doomben today.

With pre-race favourite Buffering scratched this morning, the race was blown wide open and at the time of race jump the top five horses were paying between $6.50 and $9.00 at bookmaker.com.au.

As expected, Adebesi set the pace early and Sea Siren was able to get a good run on the back of the speed. As they came into the straight Jim Cassidy was able to bring the filly to the lead and she galloped away for a one-length victory.

Cassidy was full of praise for trainer John O’Shea who opted to target the $1 million Stradbroke Handicap instead of the Group 1 races in Sydney during the autumn.

“A great training performance. He set this filly for the Stradbroke instead of going through Sydney,” Cassidy said.

“One hell of a trainer, marvellous training performance.”

Cassidy is confident the winner of four of six starts will produce a good showing in the Group 1 Strabroke where she will carry one of the lightest weights in the field.

“51.5kg, I’ll be doing it a little bit tough but I’ve found a good one so it’ll be worth it,” Cassidy said.

Trainer O’Shea said the daughter of Fastnet Rock is likely to head to the Doomben 10,000 in two weeks time before tackling the Stradbroke on June 9.

“I’ll get her home now and see how she is and then run her in the 10,000,” O’Shea said.

Dan Morton-trained seven-year-old Scenic Blast continued his promising comeback, finishing runner-up after also running second to Buffering last start.

Last year’s Doomben 10,000 winner Beaded also made a promising return from a spell to finish third after trainer Peter Snowden threatened to retire the Lohnro mare earlier this week.

The first of the Brisbane Group 1 races may be over but the carnival is just getting started and the best place to back a winner this winter is at bookmaker.com.au.
