Red Typhoon Takes 2012 SA Fillies Classic

Robert Smerdon-trained race favourite Red Typhoon has produced a sensational finish to take top honours in the Group 3 2012 SA Fillies Classic (2500m) at Morphetville today.

With scheduled jockey Glen Boss unable to make the ride, Luke Nolen took the reigns on the Hold That Tiger three-year-old and he produced a quality ride.

Heavily backed New Zealand filly Crimson Lady looked to have the pick of the race, sitting just behind the lead for the majority of the run while Red Typhoon sat further back in mid-field.

Crimson Lady pushed to the lead at the top of the straight but at that stage Nolen began to peel Red Typhoon to the outside.

The winner of three of 13 starts showed a sharp turn of foot to push to the lead and gallop away to record a two-length win ahead of Crimson Lady and Eldami.

Robert Smerdon was thrilled with the ride of Nolen who filled in for Boss after his plane was delayed.

“It’s nearly an omen isn’t it? When the late switch [happens]. Luke was a more than able fill-in,” Smerdon said.

It marks a first Group level win for the filly who may now head to Queensland for the Group 1 $400,000 Queensland Oaks.

“We’re thinking about Queensland. This was her aim for the preparation. We went through the Australasian Oaks hoping but we drew a bad barrier there,” Smerdon said.

“We were pretty confident this was the right race for her. Depending on today, we thought she might go to Queensland.”

Luke Nolen will be back in action soon on the wonder mare Black Caviar so get to to have a bet on her 21st celebration race.
