Chairman’s Handicap 2012 Taken by Outsider Hume

Brian Smith-trained gelding Hume has produced an upset victory to take top honours in the Group 3 Chairman’s Handicap (2000m) at Doomben today.

Paying a massive $51.00, the Zabeel eight-year-old peeled down the outside at the straight and produced a gallant effort to reign in eventual runner-up Ironstein.

It was the first victory since June 2009 for the experienced gelding and his trainer Smith was over the moon with the result.

“The owners I am glad they’re patient [because] I had so much faith in this horse,” Smith said.

“Eight-year-old or whatever he is, he doesn’t know it. I begged them to put him back, give him one more go.

“To back him up second up and win, I am just one proud man.”

It was a special effort from Hume who finished in spectacular fashion, running the final 600 metres in 34.72 seconds.

“I didn’t know, I couldn’t say he was ready for it but I felt in my gut,” Smith said.

“I’ve always been a gut feeling trainer and I just felt in my gut that he was ready.”

Smith will take some time to decide where to next for the now two-time Group level winner with one possible option the Group 2 Brisbane Cup.

Hume now has seven wins from 32 starts and today’s victory takes his total prize pool to more than $390,000.

It was a promising return for fellow Zabeel gelding Ironstein who had copped plenty of criticism for back-field finishes in his last three starts.

Gold Coast-based gelding Warrior Within produced a solid run from the inside barrier to finish third.

The feature Group 1 BTC Cup is coming up shortly so head to bookmaker.com.au to back a winner.

Home of the $300 bonus bet, the Australian owned bookie has sensational odds on all the nation’s top racing.
