Brambles Wins Rough Habit Plate 2012

Peter Moody-trained gelding Brambles has taken out a thrilling photo-finish victory in the Group 3 $125,000 2012 Rough Habit Plate (2000m) at Doomben today.

The New Zealand-bred three-year-old had a favourable inside barrier draw and after jumping well jockey Brad Rawiller was able to sit near the front for the entire race.

With highly-rated New Zealand gelding Nashville getting into trouble early in the race, it took one of the favourites out of contention but it was surprise packet Margins who gave Brambles the biggest scare.

Starting in barrier 15 with talented young jockey Tim Bell in the saddle, the Toowoomba-based $51.00 outsider produced a remarkable run to peel around the outside at the top of the straight and hit the line hard to just get beaten by a bob of a head by Brambles.

New Zealand filly Poste Restante produced a typically strong finish down the inside to come home in third place and looks a promising prospect at longer distances for both the Queensland Oaks and Derby.

It was the first win of the year for Brambles who had been impressive when fourth in the Group 3 Carbine Club Stakes and third in the Gunsynd Classic.

The son of Savabeel now has three wins from eight starts and looks primed for a tilt at the Group 1 Queensland Derby which will be held at Eagle Farm on June 9.

Race favourite Isopach finished fourth while Robert Heathcote-trained Gunsynd Classic winner Trump finished in fifth place, struggling slightly in his first step up to 2000 metres.

The Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival is now well and truly underway and has great value odds on all the top races.
