A capacity field of sixteen fillies will line up...
Kiwi raider Six O’Clock News has opened the favourite to win the Chairman’s Handicap 2012 at Doomben on BTC Cup Day this Saturday but is the veteran Zabeel gelding capable of saluting for the punter in their first run in Australia since the spring of 2009?
Due to jump as Doomben Race 5 at 2:30pm the $115,000 Group 3 BOQ Albany Creek Chairman’s Handicap (2000m) field doesn’t really boast the class or depth of other years, and the form pick for the bookies and punters is the Trent Busuttin & Natalie Young-trained Six O’Clock News.
The rising eight-year-old is the 58.5kg top weight of the field and will be ridden by flying Sydney hoop Nash Rawiller from barrier 11.
In the Chairman’s Handicap odds at our preferred bookie bookmaker.com.au Six O’Clock News sits top of the markets at $3.60 despite giving 4.5kg away to all of their rivals bar the out-of-form Ironstein (57.5kg).
Even though it’s a big weight they don’t face a lot and they come off a good third to Shez Sinsational in the Group 1 Auckland Cup (3200m) at Ellerslie on March 7.
The Auckland Cup form has proved a nice one to follow with Shez Sinsational winning her next two starts including the Group 2 AD Hollindale Stakes (1800m) at the Gold Coast last Saturday.
Three other Chairman’s Handicap hopefuls are at single-figures behind the favourite with:
- #10 Streets Away ($4.40) – Alan Bailey-trained Gold Coast galloper has been thereabouts in their three this time in including a slashing third behind Shamardashing over 2200m at their home track last Saturday
- #5 Count Encosta ($7.50) – John Thompson’s Encosta De Lago gelding comes off two eighth place finishes but over unsuitably distance, ready for a big run over the 2000m
- #11 Diago ($8) – Liam Birchley-trained Brisbanite won back-to-back Eagle Farm races over 1835m and 1810m before their seventh to Ginga Dude over the mile last time out, get back up in distance so should be better
Other longer-priced chances in the Chairman’s Stakes betting markets that could see a punt or two placed on them for an upset include the Bruce Hill-trained Gold Coast visitor Warrior Within ($10), dual Group 3 winner Ironstein ($12), Bryan Guy’s seven-year-old grey Shuffle The Cash ($13), and the Rob Heathcote-trained Marked ($13).
