They may be close to 20 months without a win to their name but Gai Waterhouse’s former Group 1 champion Herculian Prince is being tipped to return to form in the 2012 Lord Mayor’s Cup at Rosehill this Saturday opening as the clear favourite in the markets.
A final field of 10 gallopers are engaged for this year’s edition of the $100,000 Listed Lord Mayor’s Cup (2000m) which runs as Rosehill Race 6 at 3:15pm on Saturday.
Leading out the field and topping the Lord Mayor’s Cup odds at bookmaker.com.au is Yamanin Vital six-year-old Herculian Prince at a quote of $3.70.
Drawn in the ‘visitor’s gate’ 10 of 10 Herculian Prince will be ridden by Kathy O’Hara for just the second time, O’Hara having partnered with them for one run back in November of 2009.
Not having won a race since their Group 1 success in the 2010 The Metropolitan, Herculian Prince looked ready for a big run last time out coming within a long neck of their stablemate Western Symbol when second in the Listed JRA Plate (2000m) at Randwick on April 21.
In a tight Lord Mayor’s Cup betting market there are three other chances under $10 with:
- #3 Skyerush ($4.60) – Guy Walter-trained Super Jet mare in super form having won the Group 2 Emancipation Stakes (1600m) at Randwick on April 28, always honest and always run well at this time of their preparation and distance looks ideal. Best Value Bet For Us.
- #6 Wazn ($4.60) – One of three chances for Chris Waller, the nicely drawn (barrier two) Wazn has the gate and the right lead-up having run a promising fourth first-up to Star Of Octagonal in the Listed Rowly Mile (1600m) last Saturday, ace Kiwi hoop James McDonald is replaced by Christian Reith, the 2000m second-up is perfect, and they can handle all track conditions. Genuine Each Way Chance.
- #4 Crafty Irna ($4.80) – Out for a win in her final run for the season, Ron Quinton’s Starcraft mare comes off a fifth in the Emancipation, probably can’t win meeting Wazn equal on 54.5kg, but their 2000m record is good. Place Chance.
Other hopefuls at juicier Lord Mayor’s Cup odds that could prove the value bet of the day include Waterhouse’s other runner Kinnersley ($14), Waller’s Kiwi import Firebolt ($15) and even 2011 The Metropolitan winner The Verminator ($26).
