Hampden Stakes 2012 – Final Field and Barrier Draw

A talented field of two-year-old horses have been named to contest the Listed 2012 Hampden Stakes at Doomben this Saturday in what will be one of the highlights of the opening day of the Brisbane Winter Carnival.

Included in the 12-horse field for the $100,000 event are a number of TJ Smith hopefuls and Saturday’s headline act is debut winner Better Than Ready.

Trained by Kelly Schweida, the colt opened at over $20.00 prior to his debut at Eagle Farm on April 21 but by race jump held the favourite tag.

The betting plunge on the son of More Than Ready was justified as he stormed home to win by 1.3 lengths after a slow start.

With excellent racing conditions expected for Saturday, Better Than Ready has an excellent opportunity to build on his debut victory after drawing a favourable barrier four position.

Another horse heading into the race in good form is Gold Coast-based colt Dansonate who is fresh off a third-place effort in the Listed Ken Russell Memorial Classic at his local track last start.

The son of Snippetson has shown plenty of promise in 2012, winning first-up and scoring two third-place finishes since with a worst result of fourth.

Last-start winner Boban looked to be one that could challenge Better Than Ready but the Anthony Freedman-trained colt has a tough task after drawing barrier 11.

After struggling with back-field finishes in his first two career starts, he signalled his potential on April 4 when winning by 1.5 lengths at Sandown-Lakeside.

Positioned well to succeed first-up is John O’Shea-trained filly Hoss Amor who will run from the inside with highly-rated New Zealand jockey James McDonald on board.

The daughter of General Nediym has not run since her seventh-place finish in January’s Magic Millions Classic but prior to that won on debut in a lead-up event at Wyong.

The betting markets on all the opening winter carnival day action will open shortly at Races.com.au preferred bookie – bookmaker.com.au.
