Go The Knuckle Ready for Black Caviar Clash – The Goodwood 2012

Local gelding Go The Knuckle may not be much of a chance of overcoming super mare Black Caviar in Saturday’s 2012 Goodwood but trainer Mark Minervini is confident he will go into the race in top condition.

Go The Knuckle heads into his clash with champion Black Caviar in good form

Fresh off a third-place effort to fellow Goodwood starter Outlandish Lad in the DC McKay Stakes, the promising three-year-old has won three times from seven starts including the Group 2 Centrebet Classic at Morphetville On March 12.

He has placed on another three occasions and while Minervini is not brave enough to say he can beat the world’s best sprinter, he hopes he will feature in the placings.

“He’s come through it well. He dashed down three furlongs on Tuesday morning and went well and he’s pulled up well so we’re looking forward to the challenge,” Minervini said.

“He’s a young horse but every start he’s had in his life he’s hit the line hard and we’re hoping he can do that again on Saturday.”

Bought for $47,000 at the Magic Millions Adelaide Yearling sale, the son of Elvstroem has easily paid back his price tag with almost $240,000 in prize money acquired so far.

The youngster is yet to compete at Group 1 level but Minervini believes if Black Caviar wasn’t racing on Saturday he would be among the top winning chances.

“He’s a Group 2 winner and I think if Black Caviar wasn’t in the race he’d probably start favourite in the Goodwood and probably be really hard to beat,” Minervini said.

Go The Knuckle will carry 55.5kg, 1.5kg less than the champion mare and will be ridden out of barrier three by Shayne Cahill.

He currently sits as equal second favourite at $31.00 (bookmaker.com.au) along with Mark Kavanagh-trained pair We’re Gonna Rock and Catapulted and Mossman gelding Stirling Grove.

Black Caviar assumes her regular role as odds-on favourite and is currently paying $1.04.
