Full Field for 2012 Rough Habit Plate

The Brisbane Winter Carnival action kicks off this weekend at Doomben Racecourse and one of the key support races to the feature Group 1 BTC Cup is the Group 3 2012 Rough Habit Plate (2000m).

A full allotment of 16 horses were today named in the final field for the $125,000 three-year-old event, including plenty of Queensland Derby hopefuls.

Headlining the field is John Thompson-trained gelding Isopach who has shown plenty of promise this year in quality Group level races.

The son of Magic Albert ran third in the Group 2 Tulloch Stakes and again finished strongly to just miss out on the placings in the Group 3 Frank Packer Plate last start.

He has a difficult start to his Brisbane campaign though after drawing barrier 13 but will be aided by having in-form jockey Nash Rawiller on board for the first time.

Drawing not much better is in-form local gelding Trump who will come from one barrier inside (12) Isopach with Damian Browne in the saddle.

Trained by Robert Heathcote, the youngster backed up a runner-up finish in a Listed event at Doomben on April 14 to produce an impressive victory in tough conditions in the Group 3 Gunsynd Classic last start.

The sun has been shining all week in Brisbane and that is expected to continue and one horse who should benefit is the Peter Moody-trained Brambles who will run from the inside barrier.

The New Zealand-bred son of Savabeel has two wins from seven starts and is coming off a solid third-place finish to Trump in the Gunsynd Classic.

Having his first race on Australian soil will be New Zealand gelding Malandrino who comes into the race in tremendous form.

The Murray Baker-trained horse is chasing a third consecutive victory and was particularly impressive last start when winning the Group 3 Manawatu Classic by 2.5 lengths.

He has drawn barrier 11 for his first Australian race and will be ridden by boom Kiwi jockey James McDonald who showed his class as a jockey during a highly successful Sydney carnival.

Other horses set to line up include fellow New Zealand gelding Nashville, in-form Toowomba-based horse Margins and Manawatu Classic runner-up Poste Restante.

Betting will open shortly on all this weekend’s Brisbane action and the best place to back a winner is bookmaker.com.au.
