Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
The updated 2012 BTC Cup odds are now out at bookies around Australia with Rob Heathcote’s classy four-year-old Buffering retaining his spot at the top of the markets despite suffering a blow with an awkwardly wide gate.
Third in the race last year behind topliners Black Caviar and Hay List, Mossman gelding Buffering is out to break his long-held Group 1 maiden status in Doomben Race 7 on Saturday – the $400,000 Group 1 BTC Cup (1200m).
While on paper he is the definite rank horse in the field of 15 especially after his seven length romp at Eagle Farm last week, Buffering still has his work cut out for him having to overcome barrier 14 of 15.
They also race at Doomben for the first time since their seventh behind Beaded in the Doomben 10,000 here last Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival, and they are obviously more suited to the roomier Eagle Farm track than here.
Still the bookies are taking no chances with Buffering who is the current $2.60 BTC Cup betting favourite at bookmaker.com.au.
Just two of their rivals are on single-figure odds to score an upset BTC Cup result on the weekend with $7.50 co-second elects Neeson and Sea Siren.
In barrier nine with Corey Brown riding the Joe Pride-trained Neeson is another son of Mossman, the five-year-old racing in Queensland for the first time since their opening three career starts at Eagle Farm back in the 2009 when prepared by Ricky Maund.
In Sydney under Pride’s preparation Neeson has enjoyed plenty of success including four stakes victories, most recently in the 2011 Premier Stakes.
They come off some good recent form at home two including their close fourth to Master Of Design in the Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes (1200m), and their last start third when beaten just a long neck by Tiger Tees in the Listed Hall Mark Stakes (1200m) on Sydney Cup Day.
John O’Shea’s lightly-raced Fastnet Rock filly Sea Siren meanwhile races for the first time since her second to Streama in the Group 2 Surround Stakes (1400m) at Warwick Farm on March 10, before which she beat Streama home to win the Group 2 Light Fingers Stakes (1200m).
Jim Cassidy stays on Sea Siren this Saturday, the youngster nicely drawn in gate five and ready for a big performance ahead of the $1 million Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) at Eagle Farm on June 9.
O’Shea is also represented in the BTC Cup this year by Elite Falls, a $26 chance in barrier 13, but Cassidy always knew which filly he would be riding on the day.
“It was a no-contest,” Cassidy said of his decision to ride Sea Siren.
“She tries her heart out … and if she runs as good as I think she will, she is a lightweight chance in the Stradbroke Handicap.”
Third favourite at a quote of $10 is then Beaded who is looking to bounce back after a substandard season.
The super consistent Lonhro mare was only confirmed as a starter and not a retiree on Tuesday having impressed trainer Peter Snowden in trackwork.
Last seen running six lengths away fifth to Foxwedge in the Group 1 William Reid Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley on March 23, Beaded enjoyed her time in Brisbane last winter and Snowden is hoping the warmer weather up in the sunshine state will be the key to reinvigorating her.
Other longer-priced chances not without their claims of an upset include last year’s QTC Cup winner Varenna Miss ($12), Tony Gollan’s The Galaxy champion Temple Of Boom ($13), and Heathcote’s other hopeful Woorim ($15).
