Jim Conlan-trained gelding Larry’s Never Late is on target for a run at the Group 2 2012 Brisbane Cup (2400m) which will take place at Eagle Farm Racecourse on June 9.
Fresh off a third-place effort in the Listed JRA Plate to Western Symbol on April 21, the son of Pentire will run in the Gayle Shacklock Handicap (1800m) at Caulfield this Saturday before heading to Doomben on May 26 for the Group 3 Premier’s Cup.
Conlan said he was impressed with the run in the JRA Plate and is confident there is plenty of improvement left in the six-year-old ahead of his Brisbane Cup target.
“He loomed up to win the race but Gai’s horses were in front of him and you have to be rock-hard fit to get past them and he wasn’t,” Conlan said.
“He’s improved off that run and I’d say there’s still improvement to come.”
The experienced gelding undertook a similar preparation in 2010, finishing third in the Premier’s Cup before running fifth in the Brisbane Cup.
A winner of seven of 33 starts, Larry’s Never Late is looking to break an 18-month drought with his last win coming in the Group 3 Rainbow Foundation Stakes in November 2010.
A winner of more than $570,000 in prize money, the versatile horse has won at distances ranging from 1000 to 24000 metres.
He is a two-time Group level winner, with his major career highlight coming in the form of a 2.5 length win in the Group 3 Launceston Cup in February 2010.
The Brisbane Cup takes part on the biggest day of the Brisbane Winter Carnival that also features the $1million Stradbroke Handicap, the TJ Smith and the Queensland Derby.
