2012 Chairman’s Handicap Field & Barriers Released

The final field and barrier draw for the BTC Chairman’s Handicap 2012 at Doomben Racecourse this Saturday has now been released with a smart 13-horse line-up assembled.

Nash Rawiller

Nash Rawiller will ride Six O'Clock News in the 2012 Chairman's Handicap on Saturday

Set to run as Doomben Race 5 at 2:30pm on BTC Cup Day the $115,000 Group 3 BOQ Albany Creek Chairman’s Handicap (2000m) is shaping up as an intriguing betting race for the punters at bookmaker.com.au.

There are horses of all origins in the mix this year including the Trent Busuttin & Natalie Young trained Kiwi raider Six O’Clock News who will wear the No. 1 saddlecloth.

Drawn in barrier 11 with flying Sydney hoop Nash Rawiller to ride, the seven-year-old Zabeel gelding was last seen running a brave third to Shez Sinsational in the Group 1 Auckland Cup (3200m) at Ellerslie on March 7 – Rawiller there for that run also.

Saturday won’t be their first time down under either with Six O’Clock News having travelled over in the spring of 2009.

They failed to impress in their three runs then finishing at the tail end of the field in The Metropolitan, Geelong Cup and The Lexus Stakes but connections are hoping they can be more competitive on Saturday with the veteran seemingly in career best form of late.

Following the 58.5kg topweight Six O’Clock News in the Chairman’s Handicap field and weights is then the Gerald Ryan-trained Ironstein (57.5kg) who is the only other hopeful allocated above the 54kg minimum.

Drawn in 12 with apprentice hoop Josh Adams booked for the ride Ironstein is also a son of Zabeel and they are looking to bounce back after three disappointing runs this time in, most recently when eighth to Shez Sinsational in the Group 2 AD Hollindale Stakes (1800m) at the Gold Coast on a Heavy track last Saturday.

Other Chairman’s Handicap hopes coming off a run in the Hollindale last weekend include the Ben Aherns-trained Spechenka (10th), the Bryan Guy-trained Shuffle The Cash (11th) and Rundle (12th).

Horses that have performed better in their most recent runs include the Alan Baily-trained Streets Away who ran a good third over 2200m at the Gold Coast last Saturday, Alan Jones’ five-year-old mare Head North who will be second-up for the season, and the Rob Heathcote-trained local Marked.

Also in the mix on Saturday are the likes of the John Thompson-trained Count Encosta, and recent Eagle Farm winner Diago.
