Hawkesbury-based gelding Platinum Jack will be racing for a berth in the 2012 Queensland Derby when he lines up in the Fairfield RSL Memorial Club Handicap (2400m) at Warwick Farm today.
Currently paying $201.00 (bookmaker.com.au) to take out June’s three-year-old feature at Eagle Farm, the Scott Singleton-trained horse can improve his chances at qualification by producing a solid showing against older horses.
Singleton admits he needs to produce a good performance at Warwick Farm today to even be considered but is confident if he does get there he is a natural stayer who will relish the 2400-metre distance.
The Platinum Scissors gelding demonstrated his staying talents last start at Wyong when he produced an impressive 2 ½ length victory ahead of 10 rivals in a 2100-metre race.
“His last start win was pretty soft in the end and it didn’t really knock him about,” Singleton said.
“He’s always been looking for that sort of journey. He’s a natural stayer that just switches off and I don’t think the 2400 metres will be any problem.”
The result was the three-year-old’s maiden victory from seven starts but he has placed on two other occasions when racing at 1800 metres.
If Platinum Jack does make it to the Queensland Derby he will line up against hot field of youngsters with in-form Gai Waterhouse gelding Fat Al the current early favourite ($4.00) ahead of South Australian Derby winner Zabeelionaire ($4.40).
The Group 1 Queensland Derby will take place on a bumper day of racing at Eagle Farm on June 9 that also features the Group 1 juvenile event the TJ Smith and the lucrative $1 million Stradbroke Handicap.
