My Ex Mate Heads Port Adelaide Cup 2012 Field

In-form gelding My Ex Mate will be out to extend his sensational run of form when he lines up in the 2012 Port Adelaide Cup (2500m) at Morphetville on Saturday.

The local four-year-old has been in stellar form recently, winning his last four starts in a streak that began at Broken Hill on March 17 with a phenomenal 10-length victory.

Trained by Peter Blanch, the son of Not A Single Doubt has drawn a favourable barrier three position and the main question seems to be how he will handle the distance after previously racing at a maximum of 2000 metres.

He will have 11 rivals this weekend including Darryl Dodson-trained pair Texan Warney and Finiguerra.

The experienced Texan Warney will carry the top weight of 59kg from barrier four and boasts a reasonable record of 10 wins and 11 placings from 44 starts while Hamilton Cup winner Finiguerra will be ridden by Dwayne Dunn from barrier 12.

One horse coming into the race with form on his side is Darren Weir-trained four-year-old Hurdy Gurdy Man who is fresh off a third-place effort in the Warrnambool Cup.

Prior to the solid Warrnambool effort, Hurdy Gurdy Man had won twice and placed three times from his five previous starts.

The distance should not be a problem for the son of Street Cry who faces only a slight step up after racing over 2350 metres in his last two starts.

Also coming into the race in good form is Mark Minervini-trained Andronica who is chasing a third consecutive victory.

Other horses set to line up in the Listed $100,000 event include local mare Beautiful Soul, Mark Kavanagh-trained Faltastic and Miss Phromly who will be ridden by in-form jockey Damien Oliver.
