Lord Mayor’s Cup 2012 Final Field & Barrier Draw

With the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival kicking off in Queensland with BTC Cup Day, and the mighty Black Caviar shooting for her 21st on the trot in Adelaide, there is certainly lots to like about the weekend racing action and Sydney fans won’t miss out either with the 2012 Lord Mayor’s Cup running at Rosehill Gardens.

The Verminator

The Verminator is one of two former The Metropolitan winners racing in the 2012 Lord Mayor's Cup this Saturday

Due to jump at 3:15pm as Rosehill Race 6 this year’s edition of the $100,000 Listed Masterton Homes Lord Mayor’s Cup (2000m) has attracted a final field of 10 hopefuls.

Topping the acceptances and weights for this quality handicap clash are the last two The Metropolitan winners with Gai Waterhouse’s Herculian Prince (2010) and the Chris Waller-trained The Verminator (2011) to carry 59.5kg each.

Yamanin Vital six-year-old Herculian Prince hasn’t won a race since the 2010 The Metropolitan but did look on track for a form return last time out when coming within a long neck of stablemate Western Symbol in the Listed JRA Plate (2000m) at Randwick on April 21.

Waterhouse has also accepted for her Al Maher five-year-old Kinnersley in the Lord Mayor’s Cup with Tommy Berry riding from barrier six.

The Verminator meanwhile has also been disappointing since they won last year’s The Metropolitan finishing at the tail end of the field in their three most recent runs.

Eleventh in the Mackinnon on Derby Day, The Verminator then ran 13th in the iconic Melbourne Cup last spring before being sent for a spell.

They resumed on April 14 to run a distant 15th behind Fast Clip in the Group 3 Doncaster Prelude (1600m) but they have a good second up record of a win and a second from three attempts.

Waller will also be represented in the race by his Kiwi import Firebolt (barrier seven) who won the 2011 Lord Mayor’s Cup in Brisbane this time last year, and Whipper stallion Wazn (gate two) coming off a fourth to Star Of Octagonal in the Listed Rowley Mile (1600m) at Hawkesbury last Saturday.

A hopeful heading towards this year’s Group 1 The Metropolitan (2400m) at Randwick in October is also engaged in the Lord Mayor’s Cup on Saturday with the Ron Quinton-trained Starcraft mare Crafty Irna having her autumn swansong.

Another exciting mare in the mix is Guy Walter’s Super Jet six-year-old Skyerush coming off a win in the Group 2 Emancipation Stakes (1600m) at Randwick on Sydney Cup Day.

Walter is out for his third Lord Mayor’s Cup win since 2005 to add to those won by Zingam (2005) and Twin Wing (2008).

Rounding out the 2012 Lord Mayor’s Cup field are then 2011 Vinery Stud Stakes winner Mirjulisa Lass (barrier three), the Paul Perry-trained Southern Skye (barrier five) and local hope Zakynthos Imprintz (barrier eight).
