Rough Habit Plate 2012 Nominations include QLD Derby Hopefuls

The Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival kicks off at Doomben this weekend and one of the key support races to Saturday’s feature BTC Cup is the Group 3 2012 Rough Habit Plate (2000m).

A total of 21 horses were today nominated to compete in the $125,000 event for three-year-olds, including plenty of Queensland Derby hopefuls.

Headlining the list is John Thompson-trained gelding Isopach who produced some promising results against some quality lineups in the Sydney Carnival.

He overcame a disappointing start to the year with a third-place effort in the Group 2 Tulloch Stakes and then again showed promise last start when fourth to Fat Al in the Frank Packer Plate.

Two highly-rated New Zealand youngsters, Malandrino and Nashville, have been nominated to make their Australian debuts and both have impressive records.

Murray Baker-trained Malandrino has three wins from seven starts including the Group 2 Manawatu Classic while Nashville has three wins from six starts and has placed on two other occasions.

One horse heading into Saturday’s race in good form is local gelding Trump, who proved himself a versatile runner when winning the Group 3 Gunsynd Classic in wet conditions last Wednesday.

It was the first ever Group level victory for the Robert Heathcote-trained horse who also finished second the start before in a Listed event at Doomben.

Both his most recent results have come on wet tracks, holding him in good stead if the wet weather that has affected racing in South East Queensland recently continues this week.

Another in-form nominated runner is Savabeel gelding Brambles, who has signalled plenty of potential in his three starts this year.

The Peter Moody-trained three-year-old produced a runner-up effort first-up at Hawkesbury before running fourth in the Group 3 Carbine Club Stakes to Fat Al and third in the Gunsynd Classic.

Other horses nominated for the 2012 Rough Habit Plate include last-start winning New Zealand gelding Urunga, local gelding Arctic and Con Karakatsanis-trained colt Reigning.

Betting will open later in the week on all Saturday’s action, but in the mean time why not have a bet on some of the winter’s feature racing at bookmaker.com.au.
