Queensland Derby 2012 Betting Update – Zabeelionaire Shortens

Fresh off a Group 1 victory in the 2012 South Australian Derby, Leon Corstens-trained colt Zabeelionaire has shortened to $4.40 in the early 2012 Queensland Derby betting market.

Fat Al

Fat Al remains a slight favourite to win the 2012 Queensland Derby

After opening at $7.00 at bookmaker.com.au last week, the bookies have responded to his half-length win in Saturday’s $500,000 event where he produced an excellent finish to beat home Sabrage and Westsouthwest.

It was the second straight victory for the son of Zabeel who now sits just behind race-favourite Fat Al ($4.00) to take out a derby double in Brisbane on June 9 at Eagle Farm.

Gai Waterhouse-trained Fat Al has shortened from $4.40 and is the deserving favourite after proving to be a dominant force in his young career to date.

The Al Maher three-year-old has five wins from seven starts, producing three consecutive victories by convincing distances in 2012 including a Group 3 Carbine Club Stakes-Frank Packer Plate double.

New Zealand Oaks winner Miss Artistic has lengthened from $6.00 to $7.00 after running fourth in her Australian debut at the Gold Coast on Saturday while Anthony Cummings-trained Strike The Stars has moved out from $6.50 to $8.00 after his fourth-place South Australian Derby effort.

One of the big movers is South Australian Derby third place-getter Westsouthwest who is now ninth in the betting order at $15.00 after featuring well outside the top 15 hopefuls prior to Saturday’s race.

Also moving up the betting list on the back of recent success are Saturday’s Gold Coast Bracelet winner Scorpio Queen and Gunsynd Classic winner Trump who are both paying $21.00.

The $500,000 Group 1 Queensland Derby will take place at Eagle Farm on June 9 as part of a bumper day of racing that also includes the $1 million Stradbroke Handicap.

Brisbane’s massive winter of racing kicks off this weekend with the BTC Cup that will see Buffering start as favourite as he looks to score a first ever Group 1 victory.
