Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Following the late autumn racing action last weekend bookies around Australia have updated their futures markets for a number of the upcoming Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival elite levels including the Stradbroke Handicap 2012 where the Peter Snowden-trained Mental is the new top elect.
Betting on the $1 million Group 1 AAMI Stradbroke Handicap (1400m), to run at Eagle Farm on Saturday June 9, opened at our preferred sportsbook bookmaker.com.au last week with odds led by the Gai Waterhouse-trained Landing.
The then undefeated More Than Ready three-year-old paid $3 in the Stradbroke Handicap odds but has since dropped out of the markets and is unlikely to continue onto the race after they finished 11 lengths away eighth to Free Wheeling in the Listed Hawkesbury Guineas (1400m) on Saturday.
Hawkesbury Guineas winner Free Wheeling is not currently in Stradbroke Handicap contention, but another victor at the meeting is with Lonhro gelding Mental now leading the markets.
Last week punters could get Mental at a juicy double-figure Stradbroke price of around $24 but they are now the $8 favourite after an eye-catching first-up win in a Benchmark 85 Handicap over 1200m on Saturday.
Mental could be joined in the Stradbroke Handicap field by last year’s brave runner-up Beaded, Snowden to decide on the six-year-old Lonhro mare’s future later today after assessing her barrier trial performance.
Winner of last year’s Doomben 10,000 Beaded has been out of form this prep, her most recent effort being a distant sixth to Foxwedge in the Group 1 William Reid Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley back on March 23.
“We will decide if she runs after the gallop on Tuesday,” Darley Australia general manager Henry Plumptre said.
“She has been such a wonderful consistent mare but those last couple of starts were right out of character.
“She had a bad reaction to an injection in the spring and maybe she still hasn’t come right.”
Beaded is equal $11 third favourite to win this year’s Stradbroke along with Tim Martin’s Gosford Guineas winner Pampelonne.
Occupying the second line of Stradbroke Handicap betting at $9 is then Rob Heathcote’s multiple Group 1 performer Buffering.
Buffering has been slashed in from their opening price of $14 after a huge seven length romp at Eagle Farm over 1200m on a Heavy (8) track last week in their first run since finishing third in the William Reid.
Punters will get another chance to back Buffering this weekend when the horse looks to further secure his Stradbroke Handicap claims by winning the $400,000 Group 1 BTC Cup (1200m) at Doomben.
