Better Than Ready Heads 2012 Hampden Stakes Nominations

Highly promising Brisbane colt Better Than Ready heads a 10-horse list of nominations for Saturday’s 2012 Hampden Stakes (1200m) at Brisbane’s Doomben Racecourse.

Rated among the early favourites for June’s Group 1 2012 TJ Smith Plate, the Kelly Schweida-trained two-year-old burst on to the scene in late April with a dominant debut win in the Ramsay Health Care Handicap.

A son of More Than Ready, the youngster opened at over $20.00 in most betting markets in the lead up to the race but was favourite by race jump following a nation-wide betting plunge.

Despite getting out of the gates slowly, he showed he was worth the hype and won by more than a length ahead of 14 other horses.

Also headed towards the TJ Smith is Anthony Freedman-trained colt Boban who turned around a disappointing start to his career with a 1.5 length win at Sandown-Lakeside last start.

One of the more experienced horses nominated is Gold Coast based colt Dansonate who ran third to early TJ Smith favourite Sizzling at the Gold Coast on the weekend.

The Peter Balzen-trained son of Snippetson has two wins from nine starts but has placed on four other occasions including a third to Better Than Ready in his sparkling debut.

Other horses nominated for the 2012 Hampden Stakes include Ken Memorial Classic fourth place-getter Dansal, Anthony Cummings-trained Coyote Miss and John O’Shea’s Hoss Amor.

The $100,000 Listed sprint stands as a key support race on the opening day of the Brisbane Winter Carnival that features the Group 1 BTC Cup.

Queensland sprinter Buffering gets his best chance yet to claim a first-ever Group 1 win after placing behind stars Black Caviar and Hay List on numerous occasions.
