Zabeelionaire Wins 2012 South Australian Derby

Race favourite Zabeelionaire has justified his label in today’s 2012 South Australian Derby (2500m), taking out top honours in the $500,000 Group 1 event ahead of Sabrage and Westsouthwest.

Jumping from the inside barrier, the talented colt settled mid-field while regular front runner Essence set the pace.

Experienced jockey Damien Oliver was happy to let the son of Zabeel sit back and it wasn’t until they were well and truly in the straight that he made his charge.

At one stage it looked as if heavily-backed Anthony Cummings gelding Strike The Stars had the plum run down the middle of the track but he was unable to find the  extra kick when required.

Zabeelionaire showed an excellent turn of foot at the back end of the 2500 metre race to dash home and win by half a length ahead of Sabrage who also ran impressively.

It was a sensational victory for the Leon Corstens-trained three-year-old and by far the best result of his young career.

He now has three wins from 11 starts and has tripled his career prize takings which now stand at over $450,000.

Zabeelionaire has well and truly paid back his price tag after being bought for $250,000 at the 2010 Easter Yearling sale.

Derby Day may be over in Adelaide but the racing action in South Australia definitely isn’t with Black Caviar looking to make it 21 straight in the Goodwood Handicap next weekend.
