Florentina Takes 2012 Gold Coast Guineas

David Payne-trained filly Florentina has produced an impressive run in wet conditions to take top honours in the Group 3 2012 Gold Coast Guineas (1200m) today.

With experienced jockey Glyn Schofield on board, the Sydney youngster was happy to sit mid-field as the likes of Didntcostalot set the pace up front.

With heavily-backed favourite Easy Running jumping poorly and getting into trouble early, it left $125,000 race open for the taking and as the field hit the straight Florentina showed her talent.

She showed excellent acceleration to take the lead and finished off the race strongly to win by a length in front of Punch On and Double Impact.

It was just the second win of the talented three-year-old’s career but was along time coming after placing numerous times at Group level last spring.

She finished runner-up to Streama in the Group 2 Furious Stakes and then third again to the young star in the Group 2 Tea Rose Stakes.

The Redoute’s Choice filly has now collected over $200,000 in prize money and has shown she is particularly strong in the wet.

From three starts on slow or heavy tracks, Florentina has scored victory on two occasions and finished runner-up the other time in the Group 3 Silver Shadow Stakes.

Nothing went right for favourite Easy Running who eventually finished more than nine lengths behind the leader in 11th place.

That marks the end of a cracking day of racing on the Gold Coast but Queensland’s massive winter of racing is just getting started so get in early and have a bet on the BTC Cup at bookmaker.com.au.

Offering a $300 bonus bet to new customers and the best odds on all the country’s top racing, it is little wonder the Australian owned bookie is the Races.com.au favourite.
