Celtic Dancer Scores Tight Upset Win in 2012 Prime Minister’s Cup

Outside chance Celtic Dancer has produced an upset photo-finish victory ahead of highly rated Peter Moody-trained mare Mid Summer Music in the 2012 Prime Minister’s Cup (1300m) at the Gold Coast today.

The Noel Doyle-trained gelding got out of the gates quickly and jockey Timothy Bell was happy to let him sit there.

As they came to the top of the straight, Mid Summer Music looked to have the race in control as she began to make her run with star jockey Luke Nolen in the saddle.

The regular Group 1 runner took the lead and it looked as if she would be too classy but Celtic Dancer refused to let go and they went neck-and-neck from the final 100 metres

It was too close to call as they crossed the finish line but as they went to the photo it was the Gold Coast-based gelding who bobbed the head at the right time and took victory paying a huge $31.00 at bookmaker.com.au.

The $1750,000 Listed event is by far the biggest win of the four-year-old’s career whose record now stands at six wins from 24 starts.

Trainer Doyle said he was confident prior to the race as the son of Choisir had improved every run this preparation.

“This time his preparation, every step he’s taken he has improved every time,” he said.

“From the alley today with the light weight, I said if he can get a good run, which he did, well Timmy [Bell] rides him well and we’re in with a big chance.”

It was a disappointing result for Mid Summer Music who has placed behind some of the nation’s best sprinters in recent times including Black Caviar and Atlantic Jewel.

Former Golden Slipper winner Phelan Ready was unable to break his winning drought which extends back to that race in 2009 but he finished strongly to take third place.
