The countdown is on until Adelaide’s major three-year-olds’ clash, the 2012 South Australian Derby, takes place at Morphettville Racecourse on Saturday and in the lead-up to the big showdown two youngsters are battling for favouritism.
Early markets for the $500,000 Group 1 South Australian Derby (2500m), set to run as Morphettville Race 7 at 3:35pm, at bookmaker.com.au had Zabeelionaire as the narrow $4.40 favourite over Strike The Stars on $4.80.
After the early scratching of #13 Practiced however and with the money starting to come in both have been well supported and now share top spot in the SA Derby odds at a quote of $4 through bookmaker.com.au.
Leon Corstens’ Zabeel colt Zabeelionaire is the up-and-comer of the two having their first stakes run since an eye-catching fourth over this distance in the Group 1 Victoria Derby at Flemington last October.
They have been in good form this season winning two of their five starts most recently over 2000m at Caulfield on April 21.
Anthony Cummings’ Savabeel gelding Strike The Stars meanwhile has been racing in elite level company since early March.
Their best runs for the year include a second to Mosheen in the Australian Guineas (1600m) at Flemington and a close last start fourth to Ethiopia in the Australian Derby (2400m) at Randwick on April 14.
Both favourites are drawn on the inside with Zabeelionaire on the inside in gate one with Damien Oliver riding while Strike The Stars will jump from gate three, Dwayne Dunn engaged for the first time.
Another notable SA Derby market mover is then the Tony McEvoy-trained local Pelicano ($8 into $7.50) coming three good wins in Adelaide, while Tohunga remains the $6.50 third favourite having now officially earned a spot in the starting 16.
Gai Waterhouse’s Zabeel gelding is out for their third on the trot and will be ridden from barrier four with Tommy Berry aboard.
The last time Berry road Tohunga it was two starts ago for their impressive six length romp over 2100m at Gosford, after which Jason Lee rode them to a one and three quarter length victory on a Heavy (8) over 2000m at Kembla Grange.
“I don’t know if we might be aiming a bit high but he is a horse on the way up,” Berry said.
“He missed the start by five lengths at Gosford and won by five and then he was too good for the older horses at Kembla.
“He is going to be a very good stayer and will run the trip right out but it is hard to line him up against the others in the Derby.”
Horses that have eased out in their price to score an upset in the Derby then include Michael Kent’s Mossman gelding Backbone ($16 out to $18) who won the Galilee Final over 2400m at Mornington two back, and Perth raider Lethal Jones ($21 out to $26).
