Prime Minister’s Cup 2012 – Tipping Guide

The bumper Hollindale Stakes Day at the Gold Coast is not too far away and one of the highlights on the exciting day of racing on the glitter strip is the Listed $175,000 2012 Prime Minister’s Cup (1300m).

A full allotment of 16 horses have been named in the field for the feature race including Peter Moody-trained mare Mid Summer Music.

The six-year-old is the favourite to take top honours and is dropping back in class after coming up against some classy opponents in recent times including Black Caviar and Atlantic Jewel.

Don’t have time to study the form? Not sure who to back? Don’t worry, the team have been hard at work this week analysing the form and are here to bring you our best picks for the Gold Coast feature race.

The Winner

#3 Mid Summer Music ($4.80)

She may have drawn barrier 15 but we can’t back against the daughter of Oamaru Force who is simply a class above her rivals.

In the Spring she ran second to Pinker Pinker in the Elope Stakes, third to Sepoy in the Caulfield Sprint and third to wonder mare Black Caviar in the Patinack Farm Classic.

This year she finished runner-up to Atlantic Jewel in the Sapphire Stakes so it is a huge drop down in class tomorrow and she should be talented enough despite the wide draw.

A predicted wet track will play further into her favour as she has won five of six starts on slow and heavy tracks.

The Placings

#5 Fillydelphia ($10.00) and #7 Parables ($7.50)

Rated by trainer Robert Heathcote as the best mare in Queensland, Fillydelphia wasn’t at her best last start but ran solidly to finish fourth and should should pick up where she left off last spring.

The four-year-old proved she is an ultra-consistent runner last campaign with three wins and three minor placings from six starts and she showed enough last start to suggest that will continue this year.

Peter Snowden-trained Parables is solid mare who showed promise in two starts in the Sydney Autumn Carnival.

The four-year-old ran fifth first-up in the Maurice McCarten Stakes and will be dropping back in class this weekend after finishing fourth in a quality Group 2 Sapphire Stakes field that featured Atlantic Jewel.

The Roughie

#6 Metallurgical ($11.00)

The John Thompson-trained gelding is a consistent runner and has drawn barrier eight which should keep him out of trouble on what is expected to be a wet track.

He was impressive last start when finishing ahead of plenty of tomorrow’s starters to win the Listed Hinkler Quality Handicap and if he can reproduce that effort he can challenge for top billings this weekend.

Agree that Mid Summer Music will be too good? Whether you do or not, head to to give yourself access to the best odds.
