2012 Ken Russell Memorial Classic Odds & Betting Guide

Kelso Wood’s ace Snitzel colt Sizzling has opened the pronounced favourite to win the Ken Russell Memorial Classic 2012 first-up at the Gold Coast this Saturday, but are they the Races.com.au team’s tip to win as well?

Sizzling and Chris Munce

Sizzling is the Races.com.au tip to win the 2012 Ken Russell Memorial Classic this weekend

A quality field of two-year-olds is engaged to face off in the $100,000 Listed Ken Russell Memorial Classic (1200m) this year, the event running as Race 4 at 1:25pm on Saturday’s Hollindale Stakes Day.

Drawn in barrier 12, into 10 with the two emergencies coming out, is Sizzling who hasn’t raced since their brave fourth to the Gai Waterhouse-trained Driefontein in the Magic Millions 2YO Classic here last January.

Leading up to the $1 million classic Sizzling was in flying form winning by six lengths on debut at Eagle Farm in November, finishing second to Noogoora Burr in the Listed Phelan Ready Stakes and then second to Driefontein in the Group 3 BJ McLachlan Stakes.

They did so well fresh on debut and have a definite class factor making Sizzling the horse to beat and the horse at the top of the Ken Russell Memorial Classic odds at a quote of $2.40 through bookmaker.com.au.

The only thing working against Sizzling is the weather.

The Gold Coast is currently rated in the Heavy range and the horse has only been tested on a Good (3) before.

How they handle the wet will be key.

So where are their main dangers coming from?

There are just two other juveniles rated a single-figure chance of winning the Ken Russell with Sizzling, to be ridden by regular hoop Chris Munce, in the picture this weekend.

At $4.60 is another son of Snitzel, the Gerald Ryan-trained Dances On Stars who will jump one outside the favourite with Glyn Schofield aboard.

First-up on April 14 Schofield guided the Sydney galloper to a good maiden win over Agueda in the Group 3 Kindergarten Stakes (1100m) and while it will be their first look at an interstate track on Saturday, they should handle it and the step up in distance well.

Occupying the third line of Ken Russell betting is then $7 chance Hoss Amor.

Another Sydney raider, John O’Shea’s General Nediym filly gets a barrier with gate two.

She won the Wyong Magic Millions Classic on debut last December before her four lengths away seventh in the Gold Coast 2YO Classic and races for the first time since.

“She is a nice filly and she’ll run a good race,” O’Shea said.

So are the top three the ones Races.com.au have rated special to run the trifecta on Saturday?

Does the form say to stick with the favourite? And are there any roughies that have genuine claims here to add value?

2012 Ken Russell Memorial Trifecta Tip

  • #1 Sizzling from #15 Utilism and #3 Dances On Stars

The favourite really does look hard to beat. They are a class above and if they handle the ground they win.

If the Gold Coast stays heavy and the favourite can’t run on it then Utilism at their juicy $16 price will be there to strike. They are an improver with wet track form and a good place rate.

Can’t ignore Dances On Stars form either, really liked their Kindergarten win.

And the others?

  • #3 Dansonate ($31) has form on Heavy tracks (2-1-1), a 63% W&P%, first official time at the track but they are a local so they know what to do here
  • #9 Courtz Boy ($26) comes off a win at the track on Heavy going a fortnight ago, were really behind the best of them last season but on a wet track they are a good roughie chance
