Southern Shimmer Set to Shine – 2012 Wagga Wagga Cup

One of the top fancies for Friday’s Wagga Wagga Cup 2012 is Taree-based four-year-old Southern Shimmer, their dedicated trainer Ross Stitt confident heading into the staying showdown.

Southern Image gelding Southern Shimmer was last seen running a good third behind Marden in an 1800m handicap at Randwick’s Kensington track on Anzac Day.

They step up to the 2000-metres tomorrow for the $140,000 Listed Wagga Wagga Cup which will be their seconds start at the distance.

Twelve months ago they ran over the 2000m at Randwick but could only finish three lengths away seventh to Yulalona on a Heavy (8) track, one run before their victory in the Sawtell Cup and two before their second in the Coffs Harbour Cup.

Southern Shimmer hasn’t won a race since their Dubbo Cup victory over the mile last September but Stitt is confident their time has come to reenter the winners’ stall.

“That’s been the plan all along this preparation,” Stitt said of running Southern Shimmer in the Wagga Cup.

“He’s had three runs back and goes into the Cup fourth-up.

“To be honest I’m half confident with him.

“His last run was enormous’ he covered a heap of extra ground and took a lot of benefit from the run.

“He’s come along in great order. I couldn’t be happier with him.”

Drawn in barrier two for Friday with regular rider Robert Thompson aboard Southern Shimmer is rated an $8 chance in the latest Wagga Wagga Cup odds at bookmaker.com.au.

Markets are led by $3.80 favourite Rain Drum from the flying Gai Waterhouse stables.

There other main rivals include the John O’Shea-trained 2011 Winter Cup winner Legsman ($8.50) and Chris Waller’s smart mare Vintedge ($9).

Stitt is out to atone for his 2005 effort in the Wagga Wagga Cup whne his country Cups champ Preciese Timing could only finish sixth to Natural Blitz.

Southern Shimmer certainly has the right form at the track having won the Wagga Guineas over the 1600m this time last year.

“I’ve got fond memories of that trip,” Stitt said.
