Prime Ministers Cup 2012 – Mid Summer Music Leads Betting

Peter Moody-trained mare Mid Summer Music has opened as favourite in the Listed $175,000 2012 Prime Minister’s Cup (1300m) at the Gold Coast this Saturday.

The six-year-old mare is paying $4.60 at despite drawing barrier 15 and will appreciate a drop back in class after running against some of the best sprinters in the business in recent times.

She ended her spring campaign with a third-place effort to Black Caviar and Buffering and after struggling first-up this year in a quality William Reid Stakes line up, she finished second to superstar filly Atlantic Jewel in the Sapphire Stakes.

The distance will suit the daughter of Oamaru Force who has recorded three of her nine career victories at the length.

Following the favourite in the betting market are Top Drop and Parables who both sit at $7.50.

Lohnro mare Parables has had a solid build up, finishing mid-field in her two 2012 starts in the Listed Maurice McCarten Stakes and the Group 2 Sapphired Stakes.

A host of horses follow the pair closely with former Golden Slipper winner Phelan Ready and Queensland geldings Listen Son and Carry Me Bluey all paying $9.00.

Trained by Toowoomba’s Norm Hilton, Carry Me Bluey has won seven of 21 starts and began this preparation in good form with a narrow second-place effort to Metallurgical in the Listed Hinkler Quality Handicap.

Providing a bit more value for the punters is Fillydelphia ($10.00) who is rated by trainer Robert Heathcote as the best mare in Queensland.

She was not at her best when running fourth in her first-up effort in the Hinkler Quality Handicap but should produce a solid effort from barrier nine ahead of her Brisbane winter campaign.

Other horses set to run in Saturday’s feature sprint include last-start winner Metallurgical ($13.00) and Heathcote’s other starter Gundy Son ($17.00).
