Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Desleigh Forster’s last start Mick Dittman Plate winner Easy Running has opened the narrow favourite to win their second up assignment in the Gold Coast Guineas 2012 this Saturday.
The Easy Rocking gelding enjoyed their first stakes victory on April 21 at Eagle Farm when they held on in a close finish to beat home Didntcostalot in the Listed Mick Dittman Plate (1000m).
It was the promising three-year-olds’ first run since crossing second to Punch On in the Magic Millions Guineas on the Gold Coat in January.
Easy Running returns to the Gold Coast on Saturday for the $125,000 Group 3 Roger Hawke Gold Coast Guineas (1200m) where they will face both Mick Dittman runner-up Didntcostalot and MM Guineas winner Punch On again.
Their first-up win gives them the fitness edge for Saturday according to the bookies who have installed Easy Running at the top of the Gold Coast Guineas odds at a quote of $5.50, the galloper drawn in barrier three with Damian Browne riding.
In a tight top three Gold Coast Guineas betting picture two horses are then battling for second spot at a quote of $6.50 with Peter Snowden’s Sydney raider Mental and the David Payne-trained Florentina in barriers eight and two respectively.
Lonhro gelding Mental boasts a consistent strike rate of 50% having won three of their six starts to date back home.
The classy contender resumes after a lengthy break, Mental last seen finishing just over a length away fourth to Instinction in the Listed Hilton Hotels Stakes (1400m) at Flemington on Emirates Stakes Day.
Fellow Sydneysider Florentina also resumes racing in the Gold Coast Guineas this weekend.
The Redoute’s Choice filly, a winner of just one of her seven starts so far hasn’t raced since her dead last finish when defeated 17 lengths by Streama in the Group 1 Coolmore Flight Stakes (1600m) at Randwick in October.
It was a disappointing result as in her two runs leading up to the Coolmore before Florentina finished second and third respectively to Streama in the Group 2 Furious Stakes and Group 2 Tea Rose Stakes.
Dropping back to the 1200m on Saturday first-up however should see big improvement from her.
The other single figure chances are then Marc Conner’s Mick Dittman second placed Didntcostalot ($7), Kris Lees’ Broadmeadow-based colt Uate ($7.50) out to improve on their 10th in the Gosford Guineas on a Slow (6), and Kelly Doughty’s local Danbird gelding Morning Captain ($9).
Morning Captain is out for their third win from as many starts this season following back-to-back Brisbane wins, most recently over Trump in the Listed National Jockey Celebration QLD Day Handicap (1350m) where they handled the Slow (6) Doomben track.
