Western Symbol Heads 2012 Rowley Mile Field

In-form gelding Western Symbol will attempt to record a fourth consecutive victory this weekend when he lines up in the Listed $150,000 2012 Rowley Mile at Hawkesbury.

The five-year-old has been in sensational form this year, winning three straigth races including the Group 3 HKJC Stakes and the Listed JRA Plate.

Trained by Gai Waterhouse, the New Zealand horse has drawn the plum barrier five position and will be ridden by Blake Shinn with Waterhouse stable jockey Nash Rawiller set to ride Fast Clip from barrier two.

The Waterhouse pair have the best form of any of the runners in the 10-horse field with Fast Clip coming off a fifth-place effort in the prestigious Doncaster after winning the Doncaster Prelude.

Consistent gelding Star Of Octagonal will run from the inside in his first race in over a month after running second to Niagara in the Ajax Stakes last start.

The Todd Howlett-trained gelding has been impressive in his five starts this year, winning once and placing on the other four occasions.

Paul Murray-trained gelding Alma’s Fury comes into the race with a promising lead up after recording consecutive third placings in the Ajax Stakes and the Doncaster Prelude.

Murray said the four-year-old would again be near the front this Saturday, provided the weather allowed for firm racing conditions.

“As long as the track plays in his favour I think he will be right in the finish, we are very happy with him,” Murray said.

“Although anything worse then a dead track and unfortunately we’ll have to scratch him.”

Running from barrier six is Peter Snowden-trained mare Raspberries who has had an indifferent start to 2012.

The Lohnro mare began the year in sensational fashion, hammering home to win the Group 2 PFD Food Services Stakes by 2.5 lengths before running third in the Sunline Stakes.

She then produced a disappointing effort when eighth in the Doncaster Prelude and she will have to turn that around when running over the same 1600-metre distance at Hawkesbury this Saturday.
