Warrnambool Cup 2012 – Final Field and Barrier Draw

A full field of 16 horses has been named to contest Thursday’s Listed $200,000 2012 Warrnambool Cup (2350m) in what is the feature event on a huge 10-race card.

Michael Kent-trained topweight Domesky has drawn wide (19) and also has the obstacle of having to carry 59kg into the event.

The four-year-old gelding contested a number of metropolitan elite level events last year and won the Group 2 Alister Clark Stakes as well as the Ballarat Cup.

He has so far struggled to regain any of his 2011 form, finishing fifth in the Pakenham Cup and fourth in the Hamilton Cup.

New Zealand gelding Mr O’Ceirin is one of the more successful horses in the race and the four-year-old has received a plum barrier six draw ahead of his first Warrnambool Cup.

Trained by Ciaron Maher, Mr O’Ceirin has six wins from 15 starts and was dominant last start when winning the RSL Plate at Flemington by 3.5 lengths.

Al Maher mare Dance With Her has drawn barrier 10 and the five-year-old will appreciate a drop back in class after struggling in two metropolitan hit-outs.

Prior to that, the Mornington-based horse got her 2012 off to a flyer in regional Victoria with back-to-back victories in the Golden Mile at Bendigo and the Pakenham Cup.

One horse coming into the race with form on the board is Darren Weir-trained gelding Magnifique Soleil who is coming off three consecutive victories.

He faces a step up in class with the Cup field but is no stranger to the track and will carry the minimum weight of 54kg when ridden by regular jockey Dean Yendall from barrier 13.

Another contender with good recent results is New Zealand gelding Module who finished runner-up in the Stony Creek Cup in early March before winning the Wangaratta Cup and running third in the National Jockeys Trust Handicap at Flemington.

Local favourite Hissing Sid has his work cut out if he is to win a third Warrnambool Cup after drawing barrier 17.

The seven-year-old was absent from last year’s event but won back-to-back Cups in 2009 and 2010.

Carrying the minimum weight of 54kg, seven-year-old Enchanting Waters returns to a more favourable distance after running seventh last start over 1600 metres in Flemington.

Prior to that she produced a storming run to win by 2.5 lengths in the Group 3 Lord Reims Stakes and then finished fourth in a high quality Adelaide Cup field.
