Trump Takes Out 2012 Gunsynd Classic

Local gelding Trump has put his case forward ahead of the upcoming Brisbane Winter Carnival, winning the Group 3 2012 Gunsynd Classic (1600m) by half a length at Eagle Farm today.

The Robert Heathcote-trained gelding got out of the gates reasonably and jockey Damian Browne was happy to let him sit mid-field as Vacallo and Voodoo Black Magic took the early lead.

As the field approached the 950 metre mark, Vacallo held a solid lead with race favourites Brambles and Trump sitting together two lengths off the pace.

At the top of the straight it was still Vacallo in front but the field had closed the gap with Brambles pushing hard down the outside and Trump finding a path up the middle.

Outsider Goldslick showed some impressive back-end speed to gain the lead with 200 metres to go but was overtaken by Trump in the final 100 and that is how the order stayed with New Zealand gelding Brambles finishing third.

It marks the first Group level victory for Trump whose record now stands at four wins from 13 career starts.

Bought for $45,000 at the 2010 Magic Millions Yearling Sale on the Gold Coast, the son of Written Tycoon has now won nearly $200,000 in prize money.

The win comes on the back of a promising build up which saw the three-year-old finish runner-up in a Listed 1350-metre race at Doomben on April 14.

After wet weather caused Saturday’s original race to be rescheduled, the track was still a heavy 8 at the time of race jump but it did not seem to worry Trump who showed his quality at the end to kick clear of runner-up Goldslick.

The Brisbane Winter Carnival is not too far away and now has markets up for all the major Group 1 features.
