Landing Leads 2012 Stradbroke Handicap Odds

After dominating the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival’s Group 1’s, ace Sydney trainer Gai Waterhouse looks to have a strong contingent heading towards the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival in Queensland including Landing who has opened favourite to win the festival’s richest race, the Stradbroke Handicap 2012.

The unbeaten Landing is early favourite to win the 2012 Stradbroke Handicap in Brisbane

Held on Saturday June 9 the $1 million Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1200m) is shaping up as a beauty this year with 109 sprinters officially nominated for the classic.

Futures Stradbroke Handicap betting has now opened at our No. 1 recommended online sportsbook with More Than Ready three-year-old Landing the pronounced $7 favourite.

Waterhouse enjoyed her most successful autumn season in many years with supermare More Joyous capping off an incredible six Group 1 victories in just five weeks with her Doncaster Mile victory on Sydney Cup Day.

Australia’s leading lady of racing will now turn her attention on the sunshine state.

Already Waterhouse has two ante-post favourites in the early betting markets for Brisbane’s Winter Carnival with Fat Al the $4.40 top pick for the 2012 Queensland Derby and Landing in the Stradbroke.

Undefeated in their four starts to date Landing was last seen successfully stepping up to black type company for the first time when they won the Listed South Pacific Classic (1400m) at Randwick on April 21.

They will look to continue their winning streak this Saturday when they take on a field of fellow three-year-olds in the $150,000 Listed Hawkesbury Guineas (1400m).

Landing is the sole single figure chance in the current Stradbroke Handicap odds.

Other top fancies at longer prices include:

  • Neeson ($10) – Joe Pride-trained Mossman five-year-old has been up there with the best this season including their close fourth in the TJ Smith Stakes, last seen running third in a blanket finish in the Hall Mark Stakes on Sydney Cup Day, started their career in Queensland under Rick Maund but hasn’t been there since 2009
  • Beaded ($11) – Peter Snowden’s always honest Lonhro mare Beaded has been one of the most steady, consistent Group 1 performers of the past two or three years, ran second to Sincero in the Stradbroke last year after breaking her Group 1 duck in the Doomben 10,000, can Brisbane bring her more glory this year?
  • Pampelonne ($11) – It looks to be a Stradbroke Handicap dominated by the Sydney gallopers again this year, Tim Martin’s in-form three-year-old Pampelonne hailing from Rosehill and last seen winning the Listed Gosford Guineas (1200m), the same race Sincero won last year leading up to his Stradbroke upset
  • Smokin Joey ($12) – Anthony Freedman’s flying Encosta De Lago four-year-old has won their last three on the trot over 1400m in Melbourne including the Group 3 Victoria Handicap (1400m) back on Golden Slipper Day by an easy two and a half lengths, have been rested since then preparing for a winter comeback and should be ready to perform well again, also ran fourth in the QLD Guineas there last year but will the 1200m too short?

Other notable chances all paying $14 are then Thankgodyou’rehere, and the Robert Heathcote-trained duo of Oakleigh Plate winner Woorim and Buffering.

Heathcote’s stable ace Buffering, who has run top three in all three of their Group 1 assignments this year, races at Eagle Farm today in the $100,000 Coca-Cola Amatil (1200m) which is the rescheduled replacement of the Victory Stakes that was part of the abandoned Saturday meeting from last weekend.
